One Step At A Time: March Movie Reviews

Hi everyone! I'm back with some more movie reviews for you to enjoy.

A Man Called Otto directed by Marc Forster is an uplifting story of hope and renewal of life.  Tom Hanks plays Otto, a rather grouchy man, who is ready to leave everything behind after losing his wife.  With many failed attempts at taking his own life, there feels like a reason he is still here.

The movie is touching and we see over the course of the movie how his connection with other neighbours change his life as well as theirs in subtle yet profound ways. Otto is not a man to sugar coat anything,  he’ll tell you straight up like it is, whether you want to listen to his ramblings or not. His blunt honesty is not always welcome, but in every situation, when Otto is confronted with doing the right thing, he does.

Another highlight is the blooming friendship with new neighbour, Marisol, played by Mariana Treviรฑo, who sees the genuine heart underneath all the grumpiness. She’s a wonderful character in the movie and brings out all the joy that Otto has buried down deep inside and shows him there is still so much beauty in life that his wife would not want him to miss out on.

I am hoping to see the Swedish film release, A Man Called Ove.

The Whale directed by Darren Aronofsky is a heartbreaking story to watch because we have all known someone in our lives that no matter what we do, we cannot reach them. Maybe they are struggling with addiction, mental health, or something that they still cannot even come to terms with.  Feeling an obligation to help the broken, can also sometimes break us.  It’s hard to tread these waters and stay afloat.

As the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover, however, we mostly do, especially in extreme circumstances. Visually, we see Charlie (played by Brendan Fraser), a 600 lbs+ man, stuffing his face with fried chicken and we immediately think, hell, why can’t he just stop eating? He’s disgusting and made a choice, why have an ounce sympathy for him? Before critical judgement, let's pause. Touching on themes of grief, severe depression, hidden identity, isolation, estranged family, a broken healthcare system, and other crucial pieces of Charlie’s crumbling life, we can see that it’s far more than just about putting down the greasy drumsticks.

His best friend, Liz, played by Hong Chau, gives an incredible performance as well. We get to see the heartache she is battling from her own losses and her fierce loyalty to try and keep others from messing with Charlie’s psyche, specifically a missionary who wants to “save him.” Taking on the caregiver role of keeping Charlie alive (she is a nurse) despite his clear wishes of not getting any outside medical help, as all the money he has needs to be given to his daughter, sadly enables his behaviours.  She is such a strong character though and it is true that in order to build resiliency, it comes with a lot of breakdowns.

As we watch Charlie further deteriorate, his desperation to reconnect with his daughter shows his vulnerability and in some ways selflessness of giving up everything to make sure she is happy in life. There are a lot of complex emotions to deal with. The final scene has a poetic closure and offers symbolic interpretations.

It’s never too late to say you’re sorry.

๐Ÿ’œWhile receiving standing ovations at the premiere of The Whale, this movie has had its share of backlash too, which you may agree or disagree with.  However, in my opinion, after being out of the spotlight for so long, Brendan Fraser's performance here still definitely deserved to be taking home Best Actor at the 2023 Oscars.

Missing is written and directed by Nicholas D. Johnson and Will Merrick.

The motherly frustrations of dealing with teenage woes is not uncommon. Unanswered phone calls and text messages coupled with rebellious shenanigans with friends are par for the course, but to certain degrees.

So what happens when it is the parental figure who doesn’t answer their phone, and just disappears? We are taken on a wild technological ride when daughter, June (Storm Reid) takes it upon herself to go into virtual sleuth mode to find  her mom Grace Allen, (Nia Long) who vanishes during a vacation in Colombia with her boyfriend, Kevin (Ken Leung).

The movie is full of excitement and offers a lot of thrilling moments, similar to the movie that I reviewed; Searching.  However, what is termed as a "spiritual sequel", there is more complexity to the parental/teenage relationship, and the intensity really grows with more plot twists that shifts audience sympathies back and forth like a pendulum.

An interesting part of the movie is June hiring a local Columbian, Javi, played by Joaquim de Almeida to help her find evidence and locate her mom. His technology skills are not quite on par with June’s, . However, after getting the run-around from authorities, June is running out of options and as much as she strives to be independent, she needs a shoulder to lean on. In this case, it’s a virtual one that the director is able to translate into a lot of warmth on screen.  We love Javi for being the ideal father-like figure that June wishes she still had in her life and the fact that Javi might not be disappearing from June’s life any time soon.

While technology has a way of sometimes pulling us apart, it is also a way to bring us back together. It brings me back to the days of Mr. Rogers when he said “always look for the helpers.”

We Have A Ghost, directed by Christopher Landon is a film that really was surprising to watch as there were so many things wrong with the movie, yet somehow it ended up being a favourite here to write about.

During the first half, we're seeing the Presley family move into a creepy, dilapidated home that probably no one would really realistically buy. Alas, they purchase the home, hoping to have a new start.

Jahi Di'Allo Winston as Kevin, plays the detached misunderstood teenager who we immediately expect will befriend the ghost - Ernest (played by David Harbour) found living up in the attic.  Soon Ernest is captured on video, uploaded to Youtube by Kevin's father, and of course, it goes viral. The film spirals a bit out of control here adding in a wacky Jennifer Coolidge who plays a psychic, known as The West Bay Medium.

After a lot of comedic moments that honestly felt awkward and misplaced with another attempt of be relevant of current trends (cue needless Kardashian references) the story takes a very unexpected turn where we become so involved in Kevin and Ernest's friendship.

David is at his absolute best, giving us such an endearing physical performance without speaking throughout the film, (technically, he did in fact speak 1 word, but I will not spoil that). I became quite invested in the mystery as to why Ernest was stuck in the attic, as did my husband. I loved the interaction between Kevin and Ernest almost immediately. There ends up being so many deeper layers to the story, which I wish the tone of the movie went into sooner, instead of the comedic flops of chaos trailing on for so long.

I never thought that I'd shed tears for a ghost, but if there is any reason to give this movie a chance, it's for David Harbour's performance.

A Deeper Dive Into The Mythos: Pinocchio Movie Review

While I was left with quite an underwhelming feeling with the previous Pinocchio film in 2022, directed by Robert Zemeckis, bring forth Guillermo del Toro and co-director Mark Gustafson to shed light on a story in such a prolific way that restored my faith of what can be possible in film-making.  Here are some of my personal insights of Pinocchio.

First off, visually the movie is beautiful to watch, from the scenery to the use of hand-crafted puppets and stop-motion animation. The endless hours taken to achieve the level of artistry here is amazing.

Guillermo touches on topics that has divided us for centuries, like war and religion. Certain scenes bring forth uncomfortable truths which may contradict belief systems, but they are questions that are worth exploring. He also delves deep into areas that can bring forth a lot of pain, like the inevitable realization of the concept of finality in all of our lives, sometimes coming sooner than ever anticipated.  Pinocchio is given eternal life, while the ones he grows to love are not granted the same fate.

We get to witness many stages of grief from Geppetto (David Bradley) as he tries to navigate a world without the pure happiness that his son Carlo brought to his face every day. There is a slow progression of him and Pinocchio’s relationship as it starts off a little rough around the edges but leads into many soft and tender moments.  It’s assuring that Geppetto comes to terms on some levels of the loss of his son, but is still able to bond with Pinocchio, filled with the purest of love that can be mustered.

Tilda Swinton gave me some shivers as the voice of a majestic wing-horned wood sprite. There is a perfect balance of her essence of light as she brings Pinnochio to life,  yet a darker feel of her powers, as the movie progresses.

“The one thing that makes human life precious and meaningful, you see, is how brief it is.”  The lump in your throat should be there as these words echoed by the wood sprite holds more emotional depth.  In reality, we are not entitled to eternal life. It’s hard to digest, but it is a beautiful quote and holds much truth in what we hold dear in our lives, like chosen family, friendships, our passions. On the opposite side, we get the nudge of what we can ultimately let go that dampen our spirit inside, such as hatred, abuse, lies, etc...

The long-withstanding notion that everything happens for a reason is challenged, while ultimately, there is comfort that we can only control so much, more so only our actions, not those of others.  We can take a deep breathe in because... In the end, what happens, happens. And then, we are gone.

Note: While there are arguments that this film is not appropriate for children, it *can* be if navigated correctly. Some kids are more mature than just their age. It's up to the parent/caregiver though what they deem is best under their circumstances. However, I strongly believe that communication is the key. Open and honest discussions can’t harm children, but silencing them could.  Use certain scenes as a teaching tool to enrich and encourage questioning. It can also be a healing arc for many who are in flux with their feelings.

Wishes Do Come True: Q&A with author, Tara Shannon

Rabbit and Bear Illustration by Tara Shannon

A book is a wonderful gift that will never go out of style. It may get a little dusty or the pages may wrinkle over time, but it’s often a treasure worth keeping. Once you open that first page, your heart skips a little beat because there’s an adventure waiting just for you and that’s pretty exciting.  A book is also like your own personal travel companion, as it goes wherever you go, no questions asked.

Tara Shannon is an Ontario-based children’s author who recently published her exciting book Rabbit and Bear Make a Wish that sprinkles a little extra magic in every page, filled with hope, comfort and endless possibilities. It teaches us connection and helps to unravel those uncomfortable emotions that get stuck. The illustrations are simple and combined with meaningful verses in every line, Rabbit and Bear become your best friends and that will warm anyone’s heart.

Tara's book Rabbit and Bear will also be showcased April 1, 2021 by Miss Kate – the librarian, on The Giggle Mat , so you’ll want to tune in for that here: Episode 3: Bunny Tales

Enjoy my Q&A with Tara below.

1. For your book, you chose an interesting pair; a rabbit and a bear. What’s the connection for you with these particular animals?

Rabbit came along out of the blue one day, or so I thought. About 2 years ago, I was looking for a way to relax and calm my anxiety and express my creativity. I decided to try and draw a rabbit and I searched Pinterest for photos. Surprisingly, my first few rabbits turned out well, so I kept going. I was adding to each image some dialogue with another animal, insect or element of nature. One of the friends I paired rabbit with was a bear and people really seemed to like the two of them together.

It wasn’t until later that I realized the personal connections... there are a few. Bear was my nickname as a child (I couldn’t pronounce the *T* in my name and it came out sounding like a *B*) and I still have some family who call me that. I used to hate it but actually like it now because it’s a link to my childhood and my family.

My parents died several years ago in 2011 and 2013. I also lost a pregnancy in 2009. Those combined losses affect me to this day. One of the gifts I received during my pregnancy was a toy rabbit. So, Rabbit and Bear are equal parts the younger and older version of myself and representative of those I have lost. My parents and grandparents in Bear and my baby in Rabbit.

๐Ÿ’

2. Let’s take a trip back to a nostalgic time. Do you remember your favourite childhood book?

I enjoyed Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit and A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh but it was the Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams that had me by both heart and mind. I remember when my mom read it with me... it was so sad but so beautiful. Like life can be.

๐Ÿ’

3.  One of your illustrations went viral around the world, which is amazing. Why do you think this particular drawing resonated so much with a global audience?

It tapped into the collective consciousness worldwide at the outset of COVID-19. I created that particular piece several months before it went viral, based on my struggles with anxiety and depression and my husband's struggle to know how to be there for me. At the time that I first shared it, it received a few likes and shares. Then, with COVID it seemed overnight hundreds of thousands of people understood anxiety, fear and depression in a way they maybe hadn’t before. They needed someone to sit with them. Rabbit and Bear were there.

๐Ÿ’

4. Another passion you have is cooking.  I read that you were dipping your toes in culinary adventures in Dublin, Ireland. So of course, I need to ask, what is your number one comfort food that you like to make?

Yes! That was an amazing adventure that I will treasure always. I went to Dublin in 2016 for three months and stayed with my Aunt (my dad was from Dublin and much of his side of the family are still there) and earned a professional cookery certificate. Pretty well everything we made and ate was amazing but my go to for comfort food has to be just about anything with fresh pasta or mashed potatoes. That or Indian food. Absolutely love eating and making Indian food.

The finished dish. Yum!

๐Ÿ’

5.  What is one piece of sage advice you’d like to share with anyone who is going through a difficult time?

If you feel you are out of your depth, ask for help.

I’m pretty much a die-hard introvert and I am stubborn but there have been times when I couldn’t go it on my own. My grief, anxiety and depression were too great and I was out of my depth. I had to ask for help. Sometimes we need help to get through difficult times. Don’t feel bad or ashamed about that. Ask for help. Reach out to a friend, family member, doctor or therapist. Pick-up the phone or send a message.

New Years Eve 2020

In every song, I can feel an emotion and in every emotion, I can hear a song.

Tonight is another nudge to remind me of this, as we head into 2021.

The ups and downs, the highs and lows, and all the unexpected thrills and chills that we go through, brings us back to the simple notion of a little thing we call life!

Happy New Year everyone!

Here are a few highlights below to enjoy of the little show we put on last night online to support some of our very talented performing artists in Windsor-Essex County.

I'll see you back in January for more musings.

O Come, All Ye Film Buffs: Holiday Favourites

With a majority of us staying in for the holidays this year, it’s a perfect time to snuggle up, grab a mug of hot cocoa (with extra mini marshmallows of course!) and enjoy some festive holiday films. We have Scrooged, Die Hard, cult favs from Gremlins to Nightmare Before Christmas, classics like A Christmas Story and dozens of others!

In all honesty, I’m not really into Christmas entirely. Instead of feeling an abundance of joy, I often feel sadness. My heart goes out to those who are lonely or simply alone. I also don’t subscribe to the “it’s Christmas” so that gives carte blanche to be making excuses for ill behaviours (hey anti-maskers, especially talking to you schmucks – we’re in a pandemic - stop your selfishness!)

For me, Halloween trumps the holidays for many reasons that I won’t bore you with. However, this blog is all about HOLIDAY movies, so let’s get back to it, shall we? I do love a good holiday-themed flick to curl up with on a cold wintery night. The moment December hits, my husband begins mocking me, as I start seeking out all the ultra-cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies. Yes, groan if you must, as it is true.

Anyhow, I’ve listed some of my favourites below. A majority you will know well and probably watch every year, but a few I will take a gander and say that you haven’t seen and will want to.

MY TOP FAVOURITES OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Over-the-top hilarity and yes probably a definite exaggeration of holiday hell with extended family, but probably relatable in some fashion too. The good ol’ Griswald’s family Christmas gathering is one not to be missed with blinding lights, fried cats and sh!tters that are full!  I don’t think I even have to explain what a gem this movie is.  If you haven’t seen it, leave this blog post right now and come back when you do!

Home Alone 2: Lost In New York - One of my favourites as nothing is more nostalgic than Christmas in New York seeing all the beautiful windows decorated, skating at Time Square and shopping at the iconic toy store, FAO Schwarz. Those Wet/Sticky Bandits are on the loose once again though and this time trying to ruin Christmas for all the good little girls and boys...but not if Kevin can help it!  Once again, Kevin’s dysfunctional family has left him to fend for himself and so he is stuck in the Big Apple all alone.  One of the sweetest moments in the movie is definitely the bond between Kevin and the pigeon lady, played by Brenda Fricker. All the rest is pure zany fun and games until someone gets the final bill on their credit card.

Serendipity - Do you believe in destiny or is life just a bunch of mere coincidences? I adore John Cusack as an actor. I loved the chemistry between him and Kate Beckinsale on-screen. A film for the hopeless or hopeful romantic that I love watching every year.

Love Actually - A film by Richard Curtis that will warm the hearts of everyone young and wiser.  Excellent British ensemble cast with stars like Bill Nighy, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and the late, Alan Rickman.  Plus some of the most adorable moments of innocence. So tell me, what can be worse than the total agony of being in love?

The Holiday - I can’t help but cry whenever I watch this movie. I relate so deeply to Kate Winslet’s character and the movie has so many sentiment moments. I loved Jack Black’s role and although some may say it’s corny, I’m looking for a little corny in my life.

Bridget Jones' Diary - An absolute favourite to watch especially during the holidays.  I think in some ways we can all relate to Bridget in one way or another at some point, feeling lost in life, love, and the fear of being eaten by hungry wolves. Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth is just a posh dream boat.  I also love the ever-so misogynistic Daniel, played by Hugh Grant. A wonderfully British film that let’s us all know that we don’t have to simply just settle for what is out there, we deserve something more extraordinary than that.

Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors (2007 musical version) - If you know me, I have talked about this film for years! It was one that I saw spontaneously one evening on tv and never could find again.  If you have seen the original 1963 Russian fairy-tale by Alexander Row, be prepared for something fresh and unique. It was turned into a modern musical directed by Alexander Igudin that is full of colourful costumes, beautiful artistic performances and weird and wonderful characters. Sadly, I don’t have a clue as to what they are saying, since I cannot find English subtitles, but it’s a wonderful musical anyhow that I absolutely love to watch during the holiday season.  I am delighted that it's currently on Youtube so you'll have to go there to watch it.

Listy Do M - Letters from Santa - If you’re familiar with “Love Actually” then you will definitely enjoy this film that has a similar feel yet with it’s own Polish charm. Set in Warsaw, Poland, we find hope from children’s ingenious methods of madness, realization over one woman’s infidelity, courage from a widowed father, acceptance from a life-changing secret, and more. Even with some of its predictability as a majority of romantic-comedies can be, this will put a little jingle in your step.

What are some of your favourites? Send me a message or leave me a comment below!

Valentine's Day 2020

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Look what I won! Another Mix 96.7 "Disastrous Dates" contest. I submitted my entry again this year, although telling a different ridiculously bad dating story. They loved it and I won! With Bill recovering from surgery, this was a nice phone call to receive. We'll have a fun date night out at Brew and I get to pick out more pretty shiny things at Charms! I shall be offering up the Samyoga prize to someone because my body says "uh no way!"

Before, I walked down the aisle last September, we had everyone watch this cute little montage we put together on the screen.  I thought it would be appropriate to share for Valentine's Day.

I am happy to be married to such an amazing person.

Enjoy the video below!

Break The Cycle: He Won’t Buy You Flowers Anymore

There is a time and a place for everything and so let me preface by saying that this blog is not meant to discourage anyone from buying a bouquet of flowers for their loved one or slamming the notion that the purchase of flowers equates abuse.

This is only through the words of a survivor on what it feels like being in an abusive situation and the symbolism of what “flowers” can represent.

It is well-known that males (and to be inclusive - as well as those who identify as something else) experience abuse too in many different forms. Specifically for men, it is often under-reported and many feel ashamed from a societal point of view to ever come forward. It is slow change to break the stigma that men are still viewed as “disposable.”  They are not and need protection as well.

This writing is from a female perspective. In the end, you can find the strength. You make the choice to leave and walk away, or you choose to give someone else the power and be carried away.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

He Won’t Buy You Flowers Anymore

The feeling of anxiety creeps up as another long day at work is now over. The familiar footsteps are heard, as the keys rattle the door, and you brace yourself because it all begins again.

You feel the quiver, as his lips touch your cheek.

"These are for you."

He hands you the most beautiful arrangement of flowers.

“I’m sorry, it won’t happen again, I promise.”

He gives you that reassuring smile and you look up at him with doe eyes and in a split second, he has you hooked.

You believe him. He loves you. Everything this time will be okay.  He’s changed.

Another lonely night. He won’t call or text, or let you know when he’ll be home. You look at your flowers laying on the floor. You remember his words, they echo in your ears.

“You’re stupid.”
“You’re worthless.”
“What good are you to me?”

You get down on both knees and start cleaning up the shattered glass vase he broke right in front of you. Tears stream down your face and for the first time now, you can feel the sting, the burn of his forceful slap against the cheek he kissed you on which seemed like only days ago.

He finally comes home.  You grow angrier. You muster the courage to tell him to leave and that you won’t put up with his behaviour anymore.

He begs you to stay and gets down on one knee and sobs uncontrollably. He tells you:

“It won’t happen again,  I’m really sorry.”
“You can’t leave me. I’ll die without you.”

You forgive him.  He’ll change. He promised you.

You look in the mirror and notice your matching bruises. One starts to fade and another appears, and another and another... In the corner of your eye, you see another set of flowers. You close the bathroom light and go over to the vase and smell the aroma of fresh cut flowers. A note is attached:

“I’m sorry, I love you.”

The words I love you hit you like a ton of bricks. You feel validated and you know he’s sorry. This is just a rough patch, you’ll get through it. He’s a good person. Maybe you need to try harder.

That familiar voice inside your head screams out: Maybe you just need to leave.

Terrified he may find you.
Wishing things could go back to how they once were.
Scared of being alone.
No one to trust.
Afraid of not having anywhere to go.

"It was the hope of all we might have been, that fills me with the hope to wish impossible things."

You make the choice to listen and never look back.

Now they will finally hear you.

“Another ditch in the road, you keep moving. Another stop sign, you keep moving on. And the years pass by so fast, wonder how I ever made it through.”

The act of giving or receiving flowers can represent a slew of positive emotions. When someone is sick, sunflowers can brighten their day, a big accomplishment deserves some and take note that even a simple apology might warrant your favourite flowers. There is also the notion of flowers for no reason, which can be a delight to somebody you appreciate, respect and love.

Flowers are not meant to be used as a manipulative tool but it is sadly a very common occurrence in many abusive relationships and if you’re a hopeful romantic, sometimes it is those small gestures that keep you hooked into the cycle. Those vibrant beauties are warped into representing ugliness and for the abuser, gives permission to physically or sexually assault, threaten the worth of the other person, and ultimately gain complete and total control so that you cannot ever leave. Crocodile tears are often part of the never-ending cycle that fills you full of guilt and willing to give yet another chance.

"You have no power over me!" Labyrinth

My love, Bill.

Bill & Melissa's Wedding Vows

Both Bill and I created our own vows to read to each other.  Here they are below:

Yes our hired prop "Bernie" is in the background!

BILL: We are made of particles that have existed since the moment the universe began 13.8 billion years ago.  The fact that those molecules have arranged to form us at this very moment speaks volumes to how rare and precious our love is.

In honour of that knowledge, I promise that I'll be there beside you if you need a shoulder to cry on. I'll be there to listen when you need to talk.   I'll be there to cheer you up.  I promise to respect, admire, and appreciate you for who you are. To help you become the person you want to be.  Because I love you and it delights me to see you happy. I will keep the tie that binds us.
We are a team.
You are my partner.

In the words of David Bowie:
Please be mine
Share my life
Stay with me
Be my wife
Our wonderful officiant Rob Tymec behind, as I read my vows to Bill

MELISSA: I’m sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say. I know they don’t sound the way I planned them to be, but as we stand here today in front of our family and friends, I promise you that I will be your keymaster, if you will be my gatekeeper.

Thank you for showing me the stars, taking me on my first kite-flying adventure, never being afraid to sing cheesy karaoke songs together, and just loving me, even when I beat you at skee-ball or continue to misplace the floss container in the bed covers.

I knew there was something extra special about you for waiting 3 months for our first kiss. I am so proud of who you are and I am touched by your genuine integrity. When we are apart, if I go out and notice the wrapper of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, or overhear someone committing a logical fallacy, I always think of you.

Whether we met through serendipity, as I believe, or simply by random chance, it is the pure blissful thought in my heart knowing that we actually met each other that matters the most.

Facing Cancer: 40 Days of Radiation

Imperfect but still beautiful

A neighbour you wave to, a co-worker you work with, a distant relative you see maybe once or twice a year for family gatherings, or even a  stranger that you meet while waiting in line at the grocery store, what do they all have in common? They have probably been through a cancer diagnosis or supported someone through it. However, it's a totally different feeling when it is someone so close to you.

I've almost lost my Dad once (through his very unexpected encephalitis illness) which took a very bad toll on my mental and physical health, even after his own healing began. I could not heal, I was not able to process my emotions clearly and no matter what doctor I went to, I still felt like this was just a nightmare I was never going to wake up from. Thankfully,  I woke up and realized that the next time (there will always be a next time of bad news - this is the reality of life) I will handle things differently, or at least try to.

I failed. I failed miserably yesterday. I got so overwhelmed with the idea of researching to make sure I knew everything about my dad's condition (prostate cancer) and what he was in for. Truth is, no one knows because every person is so different. You get horror stories from people and then others say that it wasn't pleasant but it was tolerable, and then there are the in-betweeners.  I had booklets and tons of information that I thought were all credible sources. I suppose my thinking cap wasn't screwed on tight enough when I didn't question the title of  one article stating "your prostate wants you to be a vegan." A bit extreme. I am just going to look things up when I absolutely need to.

This is a situation I cannot really control fully and my burning desire to be in-control of something, anything... is hard to let go of.  I also have to acknowledge my own boundaries of what I can and cannot handle. I am thankful to my brother for taking the reigns this time and helping out in areas that I'm not equipped for.

And so I start again.

Here is my Dad's latest blog on what happened on his first visit to the Cancer Center here in Windsor.  His oncologist is wonderful, not to mention the whole staff and volunteers there. 40 days of radiation, 5 days a week is coming up. https://tecumsehcityblog.blogspot.com/2019/07/my-good-and-bad-news.html/

The thoughtful words and on-going support never go unappreciated or unrecognized, so thank you. :)

Coping with Cancer One Day At A Time

Respecting my family's wishes to keep things private does not always work well, especially when it comes to topics like this.  Thankfully, my Dad has decided to open up and share his journey, a hopeful one. I feel content that instead of writing cryptic posts on Facebook and going to meetings at Hospice for my own self-care strategies, I can express my emotions openly and honestly, like you have come to know me to do on this blog.

I am really appreciative of all the support and I hope to update again soon.

The rock I found at Hospice after my first meeting

From my Dad:  https://tecumsehcityblog.blogspot.com/2019/07/im-baaaaack.html

<Gulp> I truly did not realize that I have not written anything on my website for about three months! I knew it was a little while but, seriously, I did not think it was that long until my daughter mentioned that people were asking about me. I did want to keep things private but realized that this was taking an emotional toll on my daughter's health and so I am coming out to share some news.

Here it comes… What is going on with me these days.

Do you want to know something silly? I really was not sure how many people were actually reading my articles. It did not really matter to me if anyone came to my website at all these days because I was really writing for my own purposes as a release from some of the tension under which I was living after my illness.

I am an old guy after all and who knows how many years more I am supposed to be around here. Until fairly recently, I felt so healthy that I expected it to be a very substantial number. Surprisingly, I really do not feel much different now but my situation changed significantly after one of my normal cancer screenings.

I have prostate cancer.

It is an illness that many men have. It appears to be in the early stages and localized, which has a better prognosis than later stages.

It took quite a period of time from the date that I had a biopsy done, and then various other tests to confirm the diagnosis.

So what's next for me? I am booked to see a radiation oncologist at the Cancer Center on Kildare Avenue here in Windsor in a few days for a consultation. From what I have been told, he is a wonderful man and very knowledgeable in this area. I look forward to meeting him! He will decide what treatment options are best.

There are many forms of radiation available, some which occur every day for a specified amount of time and others that are shorter in duration but more aggressive to treat the cancer cells.  I'm not a doctor, I'm a lawyer, so I will leave it up to the experts to tell me what will be most effective.

The sad part of all of this is that I hope my treatments don't affect my attendance at such an important event coming up. My daughter is getting married in September and I must walk her down the aisle.

I hope you understand now, dear reader, what caused my Website “invisibility” and I will update again soon.

Wish me luck on my first visit this coming week.

Happy Birthday Bill Nuvo!

An Alternative List of Valentine’s Movies for the Hopeful Romantics

This year instead of giving you typical lovey-dovey films that I have watched more times than I can count, such as, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and 13 Going on 30,  I decided to share some movies that I stumbled upon over the years, which may not fit into everyone’s Valentine’s Day mold, but they all contain the puzzling emotions that we like to call love.

As a hopeful romantic yet still to this day, nursing some pretty deep wounds from previous holidays, I know that love comes in so many delicate forms. It has the power to not only excite us, but it can also really blind us.

It is important to distinguish between love and lust. There’s a lot of murky waters to swim through dealing with those feelings.

Be okay with embracing singlehood until you find someone who is worthy in your eyes of changing your Facebook status for. “I’m not willing to gamble my whole life on someone who’s, well, not quite sure. It’s like you said. I’m still looking for something more extraordinary than that.” ~Bridget, Bridget Jones’s Diary

Also a detail not to overlook; promptly jump ship when the love that you’re pouring out to someone is unrequited. “I understand feeling as small and as insignificant as humanly possible. And how it can actually ache in places you didn’t know you had inside you. And it doesn’t matter how many new haircuts you get, or gyms you join, or how many glasses of chardonnay you drink with your girlfriends… you still go to bed every night going over every detail and wonder what you did wrong or how you could have misunderstood.” – Iris, The Holiday.

Movie List:

Love Me If You Dare: A French delight that is beautifully filmed and challenges the ways we perceive love through the ages. A childhood game of innocence trails into adulthood and spirals out of control leaving unresolved feelings mangled in confusion.

Warm Bodies: You may roll your eyes and wonder how can a zombie movie be on this list, but give it a chance and see Nicholas Hoult shine in his role as “R.”  Another quirky but well-done film that really  captures the essence of survival, companionship and the complexities of love.

Kissed:  If there is one movie that you will always remember Molly Parker for, this Canadian film would be it.  A controversial yet sensual piece about love in a very intimate way. What line would you be willing to cross between the world of the living and beyond?

He Loves Me… He Loves Me Not: I was shocked to see Audrey Tautou (the sweetheart from Amelie!) in such a dark and provocative role, but this one really caught my attention. A dose of romantic obsession never ceases to thrill me.

Howard The Duck: Do you have a soft spot for the cheesy and quirkiness of this 80’s gem? I sure do. It grew on me, the more times I watched it. The connection between Howard and big-hair, big-dreamer, Beverly, is sweet and playful. Yes, maybe just a tad bit out of the ordinary too, which makes this a perfect choice for the list.

The Hunger: Fangs out everyone! Who doesn’t love a good vampire love triangle story? Staring the beloved David Bowie, and directed by Tony Scott, it will get you a little hot under the collar.

Get Real: A sweet coming-of-age British film that explores the topic of sexuality and dealing with the jittery, sweaty-palms, heart-pumping emotions of love. Ben Silverstone is so endearing in this role, and with a lot of funny and “a-ha” moments, you’ll see that whether you’re gay or straight, there’s no perfect way to fall in love sometimes.

So there are a handful of films that you may want to try and find on February 14th! If you are mourning the loss of a love lost or planning on hexing your ex with sage on Valentine’s Day, remember to take a moment and smile because as alone as you may feel, I believe there is someone special in this big wide world who is thinking of you. “My dearest friend, If you don’t mind, I’d like to join you by your side. Where we could gaze into the stars, and sit together, now and forever. For it is plain as anyone could see, we’re simply meant to be.”– Jack, Nightmare Before Christmas.

80's-inspired Wedding Montage Dance!

Just a little teaser here ๐Ÿ’œ

Although Friday I'm In Love was not technically released in 1980, it was 1992, The Cure means so much to me and this song had the right emotion!

Our wedding will be "80's inspired" so some other eras are bound to show up. ;)

All the movie clips are from the 80's and Bill put this montage together so perfectly.

Can you name all of them? These are definitely some of our favourites!

Celebrating our 10 Year Anniversary!

Dear William,

I had been waiting so long to find Somebody and when we met, you made me believe that anything was possible. I opened up my heart and you found a comfy place to nuzzle inside.  To this day, never has a false promise come across your lips. You are more magical to me every day.

Happy 10 year Anniversary, I love you so much!

Celebrations in Colours: Mom & Dad

Mother's Day is coming up and my Dad's birthday is literally the next day, so I thought I would surprise them both with these intricate art designs that I have spent a lot of time and effort colouring.

Thank you to Bill for making the sheets fit properly in the frames!
