Success Addicts: Do The Hustle

Are you part of the 9-9-6 culture? This means that you work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week. This has been the typical life for many employees (particularly in China) up until a ruling made this practice illegal.

We still have though social media blood-hounds trying to tell us we need “more” of everything, showing us the grandiose lifestyle they are living, lavish cars that they never drive and just use for IG reels and photo ops, multi-million dollar homes, and of course the dream vacations. So is it any wonder why we’re in such a mess as a society?

There’s a difference between being successful and the illusion of success. We can play around with those ideas and fool people brilliantly, and one never knows the truth... until they do.  Sometimes we can even lose sight of who we are and lose the things that are truly important, like our health, real friendships/relationships and community involvement.

In my elementary school days, I had a teacher who wanted to "mentor" me and encouraged after-class sessions, it started with just an hour or two, and then became longer and longer, to the point where all I was doing was studying what he was giving me to learn. I would get nowhere in life without dedicating myself entirely to this, he said. I would be quizzed over and over and over, to the point of exhaustion. I was being brain-washed with ideologies that made no sense, yet I got an early dose of what someone wanted to tell me was the way to be successful. A very scary time.

If you’ve seen The Wedding Singer, you’ll recall this scene where Adam Sandler tries to become what he falsely believes Julia wants, in order to show her that he can provide the dream life too.

“No, sir, I have no experience but I'm a big fan of money. I like it, I use it, I have a little. I keep it in a jar on top of my refrigerator. I'd like to put more in that jar. That's where you come in.”

I noticed my own workaholic pattern because it felt like a way to escape. Money, it solves everything, except when it doesn’t. I was physically and mentally exhausted from life and had no idea what to do about it. This pattern continued on for many years and then to add yet another layer of stress, I was thrown blindly into the care-giving role. “Work” took on an entirely different meaning.

There is a dark message that continues to perpetuate of the meaning of “success.” It keep the guru’s making their billions, sleeping on the finest silk sheets at night, jet-setting to their private islands, and selling their latest MLM and get-rich-quick schemes, while so many are struggling to even pay their monthly bills.  These people play on our fears, our insecurities and set unrealistic expectations that we still tend to blindly follow.

I don’t want to be part of what I often hear as the hustle culture, the success addicts - to me, this is all a recipe for total burnout. But, it’s hard to escape it, as I do a lot of freelance work in industries that continue to normalize it, so awareness is key not to fall into the trap.

I can only speak for myself on a few tips that I have incorporated that really help out in my life and keep me grounded.

πŸ’œTake Physical Inventory –I go through my home on a regular basis and ask “Have I used this in the past 6 months?” “Is this still bringing me joy?”  If not, I put it in a bin and send it on its way.  Depending on the item, I could sell it, donate it, or just put up a post on my socials and offer it free to anyone on my list.  If you struggle with getting rid of things, hire someone to help in this laborious task or get a trusted family member or friend to help. No judgment-zone.

πŸ’œBring Out The Best In Me, Not The Beast – Being with people who are like-minded has been a game changer especially through this pandemic.  Although I can appreciate different perspectives, winding down socially needs to be simple. I want to laugh, smile and feel valued with the company I am surrounded by, not feel like I’m walking on egg shells or can’t truly be myself.

πŸ’œCommunity Engagement –We have so many local organizations in need, whether it's 1x a week, a month, or just whenever you can, reach out to one and see what opportunities interest you. They would really appreciate it a lot.  Finding organizations that I feel connected to has been very fulfilling.

πŸ’œBecome Rational - Getting out of my head and seeing things from a more logical perspective has helped tremendously in how I deal with life. Sometimes that "gut feeling" is really strong but there is certain level of hindsight bias, or also known as the knew-it-all-along phenomenon, to consider.  I need that nudge to think rational because I am by nature a very emotional person. When I can look at things without the emotions attached, I find that I don't question my decisions as often and I feel in control.

Although we've been in a pandemic, moving forward, I never want to be that person who is too busy to meet a friend for lunch, or can’t put their phone away to spend time with their partner. I am a very hard worker and ask anyone, I give 100% on every project I take on, but I know my limits.

Of course, having money is an important part of life, to feed us, put a roof over our head, pay for medical necessities, and yes, having some luxuries is welcome too, as we all want nice things, BUT, it shouldn't consume us. That’s the message we should be sending out. When you make it about *everything* that’s where you may end up losing your life.

The only hustle I intend to do will happen on the dance floor.

Plant-based Review: Dr. Praeger’s Spinach Littles

As the summer starts to wind down, soon will be back-to-school for a lot families. This may mean less than optimal meals because of having to rush off to extra-curricular activities or facing another night of picky eaters who would rather go on a hunger strike than eat anything you’ve prepared.

Here, we don’t have any kids, but that doesn’t mean figuring out what to eat is any easier sometimes when we are both very busy and just need something to grab and go.   Also, who says that adults can’t love some fun shapes? We’re all kids-at-heart, so I was slightly giddy when I entered the grocery store and saw these Spinach Littles by Dr. Praeger in the frozen aisle section.

These star-shaped and prehistoric munchies are made with minimal ingredients, including potatoes and spinach. They are easy to heat up and serve with any sides that you wish.  They are also soy-free/gluten-free, with no artificial flavours either, if those factors are important to you!

Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods® Philosophy:

"We want to contribute to people’s ability to live their lives to the fullest! The biggest impact we can make is by delivering the most delicious recipes made from simple, nutritious and meatless foods that help encourage good eating habits that last a lifetime."

So what are my honest thoughts?

✔Great ingredients that meet my dietary and nutritional needs

✔Cooking time was minimal which is always a plus

✔They taste really good (just need something to dip as the spinach flavour is pretty potent!)

✔Another thing that is amazing about this company is that are extremely philanthropic, so good deeds deserve praise and you can visit their site to learn more about their latest partnership with Farmers Against Hunger –  a non-profit organization on a mission to reduce food waste by helping farmers and wholesalers to share their surplus produce with those in need while reducing food insecurity across New Jersey.

I cannot think of anything negative to really say about these Spinach Littles aside from the price is definitely higher than your traditional frozen nuggets, but I personally feel it's a better health investment when seeking frozen-food options, but as always, you make that choice for you and your family.

Here's a few photos:

Cute packaging!

From frozen - cooking them up!

Finished! Spiralized some green/yellow zucchini
and dipping sauce is honey mustard.

Say Cheese: Violife Vegan Cheese

I was really excited when I received my package from Sampler in the mail, which had Geovita rice and lentil blend (I haven't tried it yet!) and included a coupon for a new vegan cheese brand called Violife.

I'll admit, I'm not a huge "cheese" person anymore but sometimes when grocery shopping, I will pick up a small brick or two to satisfy the craving. Before the pandemic, if we ate out at a restaurant, I would order something with cheese, as it was more of a treat than a staple in the home. Let's also be frank, the bloated feeling after eating cheese at times is painful and uncomfortable, so I was hoping this wouldn't leave my stomach in knots.

The choices at the grocery store when I went to purchase Violife were pretty limited to either: cheddar shreds or cheddar slices, so I got:

Violife Vegan Cheddar Shreds

We had some hamburger buns left in the freezer, so I popped one into the oven and just did a wee sprinkling of the Vegan Cheddar Shreds on each bun. I also added some chives, as I just seem to love chives on everything!  Now I realize that there isn't a lot of cheese on here, but honestly, I wasn't sure how much I was going to like this and I hate wasting food.  I am really used to dairy cheese, so I didn't want to smother it with this type and have to toss it entirely out if I couldn't eat the rest.

Lunch time #samplerlove

Homemade broccoli soup! The cheese made such a nice addition, along with chives.
#samplerlove

Thankfully, it was delicious! I don't think you can really compare to regular cheese though as this is made with coconut oil, potato starch and corn starch. It also didn't melt as much as I had expected either but maybe I needed to leave it in the oven longer and use more cheese.

On the side, I wanted to get my greens in, so a simple salad of arugula with diced cucumbers, carrots and a honey mustard dressing.

After looking at the website, I am curious to know what other styles taste like, especially the vegan cream cheese! Mmmm...  Am I going to replace cheese with these alternatives? Honestly, I don't really know. I just like having choices and I'm happy that I found a good brand like Violife to add to my shopping list.

Pros:

✔Tastes great (no weird aftertaste like I have heard from other vegan cheese alternatives)

✔Excellent for people with multiple allergies/sensitivities

✔Good for the environment

✔Resealable bag

✔Easier on digestion (at least for me so far)

Cons:

❌A bit expensive at almost $6 a bag for 227g. Have to keep my eyes open for sales!

Product Review: Does Schmidt's Deodorant Really Stink?

Well, I think many of us can agree that for a multitude of reasons, 2020 stinks, but that doesn’t mean we have to smell foul too, right?

Deodorants are very hit and miss, they can work for a while and then suddenly stop. This can be for many reasons such as the brand trying new formulations and of course the natural changes that our bodies have over time. Hi hormones, yup I am talking to you!

The whole natural movement needs to be looked at with a critical eye though, as it has its own pros and cons. Plus, they can be pretty expensive and not live up to its claims.

Thanks to ChickAdvisor, I was able to try out a sample of Schmidt's Deodorant in the scent Rose and Vanilla.

#chickadvisor

WOWZERS... this scent is strong! Opening up the lid, you are hit with the smell of roses right off the bat. I honestly couldn’t smell any vanilla but after a few more times of sniffing, it was there, or shall I say barely there.

The application stick was easy to use, just twist once or twice for the product to come to the top, and then swipe each underarm area.

#trySchmidtsNaturals

After approximately 8 hours of wear-time today, doing house chores, cooking, and getting in my daily exercise, I’m STILL smelling like roses.

PROS

✔Glides on easily

✔Texture is good. No stickiness or residue left on the skin or my clothing

✔Somewhat effective at curbing sweat, a little goes a long way (I didn’t need to re-apply at all)

✔Cruelty-free

✔Sensitive skin friendly (this may depend on each person as certain scents can evoke an allergic reaction whether synthetic or natural – so still be cautious of a reaction - I usually prefer everything I put on my body to be totally fragrance-free)

✔Reasonably priced, in comparison to many other natural deodorants on the market

Other aspects that may appeal to you:  Cruelty-Free (Leaping Bunny Certified) and Certified Vegan

πŸ’

CONS

❌This particular scent is too strong (although others may like it) for me. If they could reformulate, I would like something much more milder, maybe less rose, more vanilla.  I feel like if I was out in public at an appointment where they have a “scent-free” environment, I’d be asked to leave because it is that potent. Wheeewie!

❌ A bit of that "sweaty" feeling (not scent though) after a few hours in.

πŸ’

So would I ditch my other deodorants and go by this one? Probably not yet. The scent for me is just too overpowering. However, it is so far fairly effective at keeping sweat at bay, so maybe another scent has potential.

Have you tried Schmidt's or any other natural deodorants, what are your thoughts? Leave me a comment below!

Gary Gulman – The Great Depresh

Depression is a complicated beast. It has the ability to change how you think, how you feel and how you act.  It slowly sucks away any bit of joy that comes into your life and leaves a cloud of despair and darkness. For many, it may be a fleeting episode, for others, it’s a condition that needs life-long monitoring.  Depression feels like a child-like proof medicine bottle that you want to throw across the room because it won’t budge no matter what you do. Add in the waves of anxiety, and it’s just a whole barrel of fun complete with an on-going shower of sweat and many reps of pacing back and forth. At least it’s some sort of exercise, right?  Ya, not exactly the cardio workout one would wish for.

Gary Gulman is an American Jewish Comic that has battled anxiety as well as crippling depression for years in silence but has recently opened up and found that laughter can be the very best medicine. In his comedy special: The Great Depresh, Gary talks candidly about the dark times in his life, telling stories of his bullied youth, sharing the a-z list of antidepressants that sound like a Dr. Seuss rhyme, experimenting with electro-convulsive therapy, and ultimately choosing symptoms like dry mouth over death.  Sade, his wife, has watched Gary through the highs and lowest of lows. She goes to appointments with him, and along side their fur-family, gives Gary the unconditional love and support that he needs.

I won’t spoil anymore. There is some self-deprecating humour that you can take or leave, and you can’t help but just love Gary’s mom, Barbara. Through a documentary-style with bits of stand-up performance, it’s still an emotional journey of laughter and tears that I think is important to embrace.

To you Gary, for all your hard work in dealing with something that seems sometimes bigger than you can even handle, and to let everyone know that we’re not alone for the ride, I raise a glass of Sprite and say l’chaim, to life!

Check out Gary's website and social media sites below, and let’s hope that the depresh can be kept in remish.

Break The Cycle: He Won’t Buy You Flowers Anymore

There is a time and a place for everything and so let me preface by saying that this blog is not meant to discourage anyone from buying a bouquet of flowers for their loved one or slamming the notion that the purchase of flowers equates abuse.

This is only through the words of a survivor on what it feels like being in an abusive situation and the symbolism of what “flowers” can represent.

It is well-known that males (and to be inclusive - as well as those who identify as something else) experience abuse too in many different forms. Specifically for men, it is often under-reported and many feel ashamed from a societal point of view to ever come forward. It is slow change to break the stigma that men are still viewed as “disposable.”  They are not and need protection as well.

This writing is from a female perspective. In the end, you can find the strength. You make the choice to leave and walk away, or you choose to give someone else the power and be carried away.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

He Won’t Buy You Flowers Anymore

The feeling of anxiety creeps up as another long day at work is now over. The familiar footsteps are heard, as the keys rattle the door, and you brace yourself because it all begins again.

You feel the quiver, as his lips touch your cheek.

"These are for you."

He hands you the most beautiful arrangement of flowers.

“I’m sorry, it won’t happen again, I promise.”

He gives you that reassuring smile and you look up at him with doe eyes and in a split second, he has you hooked.

You believe him. He loves you. Everything this time will be okay.  He’s changed.

Another lonely night. He won’t call or text, or let you know when he’ll be home. You look at your flowers laying on the floor. You remember his words, they echo in your ears.

“You’re stupid.”
“You’re worthless.”
“What good are you to me?”

You get down on both knees and start cleaning up the shattered glass vase he broke right in front of you. Tears stream down your face and for the first time now, you can feel the sting, the burn of his forceful slap against the cheek he kissed you on which seemed like only days ago.

He finally comes home.  You grow angrier. You muster the courage to tell him to leave and that you won’t put up with his behaviour anymore.

He begs you to stay and gets down on one knee and sobs uncontrollably. He tells you:

“It won’t happen again,  I’m really sorry.”
“You can’t leave me. I’ll die without you.”

You forgive him.  He’ll change. He promised you.

You look in the mirror and notice your matching bruises. One starts to fade and another appears, and another and another... In the corner of your eye, you see another set of flowers. You close the bathroom light and go over to the vase and smell the aroma of fresh cut flowers. A note is attached:

“I’m sorry, I love you.”

The words I love you hit you like a ton of bricks. You feel validated and you know he’s sorry. This is just a rough patch, you’ll get through it. He’s a good person. Maybe you need to try harder.

That familiar voice inside your head screams out: Maybe you just need to leave.

Terrified he may find you.
Wishing things could go back to how they once were.
Scared of being alone.
No one to trust.
Afraid of not having anywhere to go.

"It was the hope of all we might have been, that fills me with the hope to wish impossible things."

You make the choice to listen and never look back.

Now they will finally hear you.

“Another ditch in the road, you keep moving. Another stop sign, you keep moving on. And the years pass by so fast, wonder how I ever made it through.”

The act of giving or receiving flowers can represent a slew of positive emotions. When someone is sick, sunflowers can brighten their day, a big accomplishment deserves some and take note that even a simple apology might warrant your favourite flowers. There is also the notion of flowers for no reason, which can be a delight to somebody you appreciate, respect and love.

Flowers are not meant to be used as a manipulative tool but it is sadly a very common occurrence in many abusive relationships and if you’re a hopeful romantic, sometimes it is those small gestures that keep you hooked into the cycle. Those vibrant beauties are warped into representing ugliness and for the abuser, gives permission to physically or sexually assault, threaten the worth of the other person, and ultimately gain complete and total control so that you cannot ever leave. Crocodile tears are often part of the never-ending cycle that fills you full of guilt and willing to give yet another chance.

"You have no power over me!" Labyrinth

Baby Talk with Jordynne Sharp!

Cohen and Mommy

It’s always a great experience when I can meet new people. By “meet” that doesn’t always mean face-to-face either. No matter the distance, the Internet gives us the opportunity to connect with others in all sorts of ways.

Although my blog is not usually on the topic of parenthood, I thought it would be a nice change of pace to collaborate with another blogger and talk about her adventures of being a Mom! :)

I’d like to give a warm welcome to Mommy blogger, Jordynne, for taking the time to do this Q&A with me on my site!

Family time!

Any favourite baby brands that you are passionate about, and can you tell me why they're a staple in your home?

One of my favourite baby items that I honestly never thought was something I would want to splurge on is the baby jogger stroller. It is so smooth and I rave about it all the time to my mommy friends. It folds up so easily and it has big wheels on it so its great for getting through any rough terrain (not that I'm offroading with a stroller!). I love that the straps are so comfortable for my son and really hold him in snuggly since he is a climber and will try to climb out of everything.  The only thing I dislike is that it's a little heavier than other strollers
πŸ’

It's interesting to note that some women don't experience any morning sickness or any bizarre food cravings, like the most commonly talked about pickles and ice cream! Did you have any issues and if so, how did you handle them?

I experienced morning sickness that lasted around 3 weeks. I lost weight during that time in my pregnancy since everything seemed unappetizing to me. I found that sour gummy candies really helped me through the nausea or any kind of food that was very watery, such as watermelon and cucumbers. Luckily the morning sickness did not last very long with me, however, I did get very bad swelling in my feet later on in the pregnancy. I had to make sure I was elevating my feet when I slept, to help bring the swelling down. I even bought bigger shoes.
πŸ’

Did you consider a home birth with a doula at any point during your pregnancy, or did you want to just stick to the traditional way of going into the hospital?

I never considered a doula or home birth because I was already so comfortable with my doctor. Everything was so sudden and brand new for me that I basically just did as my doctor suggested. I think for my next child though, it would be something I would consider now that I have already gone through the process once.

πŸ’

You must be armed with diapers galore right now! Are there any other must-haves that you stocked up before the baby came?

We had so many different brands of diapers before the baby was born; Huggies, Pampers, Kirkland and No Name. After he was born, we found that he leaked out of EVERYTHING! We ended up trying The Honest Company diapers and had very little issues with them. We now subscribe to them and get a package sent to us every month with diapers and wipes. We never need to worry about picking any up at the store. It just comes right to us and the prints are adorable!

πŸ’

How did you pick your baby's name?

My boyfriend and I could not agree on a name for our baby boy. It wasn't until about the seventh month that we finally agreed on the name Cohen! Someone suggested it and we both lit up and looked at each other and we just knew. It was perfect. This might be cheesy, but if you've ever seen the show the O.C. the main characters last name is Cohen and we both really love that show. He originally wanted to name our son Falcon, but I was very against the idea.

πŸ’

What is the biggest fear about being a new Mom?

I am such a worrier, everything scared me about being a new mom! No amount of reading could prepare me. I think my biggest fear as a new mom was SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) because it is a common thing and so heartbreaking. I was constantly going in his room and making sure he was breathing. To be honest, he’s 14 months old now and I STILL go in and place my hand on his chest and belly to feel him breathing.

πŸ’

Thanks Jordynne for this great Q&A!

πŸ’œBeing a new Mom is quite a journey and so whether you're looking for the best products to buy for your baby, how to deal with finances, or just want to get a new perspective of the crazy yet excited world of Mommy-hood,  you’ll want to follow her on TikTok

Heart and Stroke Volunteer

Hi everyone!

There are so many worthy causes and it's hard to be active in everything. However, I have chosen this time around to volunteer for the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

I would be thrilled if you could drop by my page and make a donation!

If you would rather donate by cash/cheque in-person to me in Windsor, that can certainly be arranged as well.

My current goal is $100,but I am hoping with the generousity of others, I can surpass that.. :)

Thanks again!

Physiotherapy: Why "I Love You" Makes a Difference

Well it’s been over a month or so of intense physiotherapy and I am seeing some improvements with my pain levels, not to mention my flexibility. Strength, well that ranges from day to day. Sometimes I can easily open up a jar and other times “Bill, can you come please help open this!”  Side note: one of the best presents Bill ever got me for the kitchen: This gadget rocks when i'm solo and no one is around to assist me: Easy Twist Jar Opener

My personalized physiotherapy program was designed exactly for the issues that I asked for help with, along with problems that they saw when I did my assessments. I won’t go into a ton of detail on what I’m doing because it may not be what you are actually needing for your own recovery. I will though include some parts that I think are really helpful for everyone, but I would encourage you to book a consultation to assess your individual needs.

For pelvic floor physiotherapy, you need to be comfortable with your physiotherapist. If you’re not, it’s going to be a clenching fiasco, which for most of us who suffer with tight pelvic floor muscles is a nightmare.  The internal exam and on-going internal “work” is really important. I did ask Catherine if she sees patients who forgo the internal part and she said yes, but when that is the case, there is only so much she can do.

I’m past the point of being shy. I cannot count how many specialists have seen my tush and other intimate areas. It still is a bit of a source of trauma for me on an emotional level because of what I have been through, but in order to heal, those trigger points inside need to get some much needed tlc and external only does so much.  I am doing a lot of work at home because let’s not kid ourselves, therapy is expensive. My coverage has ran out for the year and so everything now is paying out of pocket.  This is why I am really happy with my time at Physiofit because they realize that we’re not all money trees. I have plenty of exercises to do daily at home between visits, so it’s kind of like Santa Claus knowing if you are awake or have been good or bad (not in the same creepy way though). The physio team knows if their clients have been diligent in the exercises or slacking.

Just some of the exercises that I do on a daily basis at home and also at Physiofit (amongst others that they have special equipment for). I get assessed and different exercises get put in and others get taken out, depending on how my body is responding and what they think I should work on next.

Now for the physiotherapy part that doesn’t involve any internal work, there is still a lot of parts of the body that I knew I had some pain but didn’t realize the difference when I started to activate those muscles properly.  Posture, a big one. I have “sitting syndrome” which I think a lot of us can relate to, whether we’ve worked in jobs that have us sitting a majority of the day or have been in bed-ridden situations where our muscles just become very weak from lack of movement.  My upper back is super duper tight, which is part of the area where I hold my stress, and so with the all the targeted exercises I have been doing, I can really feel a positive difference and Bill also uses his magical hands when i'm really achy. Incorporating everything and also making the time to book massages, which works well for me.

I recall my first time on the treadmill, which has been my warm-up, and I didn’t realize how much I swayed with my hips and shoulders. Being aware of these things helps to break the habit, although most of us probably don’t even realize that we’re walking incorrectly and causing so much extra pain.  The best part though is investing your time with a professional team and giving a whole stack of effort, it can get better.

Now I am sure you are wondering about my title of “I love you” and how that relates to this blog.  While positive words of affirmation are always encouraged, I am actually referring to a specific exercise that I have been taught a few times now called the I love you massage.  This helps with cramps, gas, constipation, and all those fun digestive symptoms. I have a video here to show you basically how it’s done. It may not work the first time for you, or the second, but keep at it. It’s simple to do and really helps to move things along. Some videos you will see show immediate relief, but from my own experiences, it can take a few hours to even overnight. It just depends on how congested my body is.

A great video that shows how the technique is done.

I am doing a lot of other things along with physiotherapy, so i'll have another blog up on those details soon!

As always, thank you for the on-going support.

If you have any questions, feel free to connect with me over e-mail, leave a comment on my blog or find me on Facebook.

Health: Get the Balance Right

I find that taking photographs is really peaceful and it allows me to get lost in the moment, so here are a few I took recently.

Food: Nutrition of Green Beans

It is technically not quite summer yet, but I am seeing a lot of delicious produce and when those sales come on, it's easy to pack away the frozen vegetables for a later time and opt out for fresh.

Green beans are a personal favourite of mine. If you didn't know, they are packed with a lot of nutritional value, like Vitamin A, C, K, and of course dietary fibre, which you read more in depth from this site here that has a lot of good articles on health and nutrition:  Nutrition of green beans

They were in a giant crate at Metro for $1.88/lb, so we bought a good amount to last us the week. We used them as side dishes, and incorporated into our salads.

I know that some people can wash green beans and then consume them raw, but personally I find this extremely difficult on my stomach and digestion.  Once they are cooked, I have no issues eating them cold, but that's as far as I go!

Anyhow, just a quick photo of some fresh green beans that I steamed up, sprinkled with a bit of oregano, maple bacon salt, and a little melted butter. Yum!

How do you like your green beans? Send me an e-mail or leave a note under this post!

Ask Bill: Drinking Water Safety

Welcome to this week's “ASK BILL”

Bill has been overwhelmed by the number of requests that he receives from people asking him a variety of questions related to science and scams that circulate on the Internet and elsewhere. To manage his time effectively, Bill has decided to do a weekly fun and educational "Ask Bill" segment.

Every Wednesday, Bill will choose one question from his e-mails and answer another science or hoax question. Get your questions into him ASAP.

Check out below for today's question about: "Is city water safe to drink?

Answer:

This week's question is quite interesting.

I was sent a link to a Facebook post about a guy (we will call Jean-Claude) who is complaining about the quality of Windsor's drinking water. I will admit that this is an area I don't have that much knowledge in but I have taken one course on water treatment and health so I have the beginnings of an understanding in this.

Jean-Claude's concern was about the chlorine concentration and also asking “doesn't chlorine lower immune systems, cause cancer and other bad stuff?” He showed a picture of a pool water testing kit which he claimed contained tap water (I will assume he was honest in that claim). He suggested that the concentration was at pool level (1.0..although when I look at the photo it appears to be at 0.5) and also claimed that since people say that you shouldn't drink pool water, then that means the tap water is unsafe. He also made a claim that showering for 15 mins allows for you to absorb 1 gallon of water through the skin by absorption.

There is a lot to go through here but lets get to the short answer first. Is the city water safe to drink? Yes. According to Enwin, “Chlorine is added on a continuous basis to the water leaving the treatment process at a strictly controlled concentration of 1.5 mg/l...the concentration of chlorine in the water is monitored at 18 locations through the distribution system on a daily basis to ensure an adequate concentration is maintained to ensure a safe supply of water to the customers.”

In regards to “lowers immune systems, causes cancer and other bad stuff”: “Health Canada has classified chlorine as unlikely to be carcinogenic to humans. Studies in laboratory animals and humans indicate that chlorine exhibits low toxicity, regardless of the route of exposure (i.e., ingestion, inhalation, dermal). Studies in animals have not been able to identify a concentration of chlorine associated with adverse health effects, in part because of aversion to its taste and odour. No adverse health effects have been observed in humans from consuming water with high chlorine levels (up to 50 mg/L) over a short period of time.” Now some people may not like the taste or smell of chlorine but they can easily install a filter in their home to remove it.

Jean-Claude said you shouldn't drink pool water. This I agree with, but not for the same reasons Jean-Claude thinks. He thinks it's because of the chlorine content. I would say it's because a pool is an open system where it has continual exposure to pollutants. People are swimming in the pool just for starters. Would you want to drink water from a bath tub that had someone was bathing in? I would think it unlikely. A pool also has insects (and other animals including birds), dirt and debris all entering it. Water from your tap is not accessible to the same type of contamination with the exception of water pipe breakage.

So now to the final claim of water absorption through the skin. This is the real reason why I chose this question because I do love laughable claims and this one sure made me laugh that I did my best Mark Wahlberg impression from The Happening.

Seriously though, the skin can absorb some things although it generally is water-resistant but is not water-proof. It's the keratin and sebum (an oil), that helps keep it at bay. You can see its effectiveness when you start to prune when in water too long. So yes it can absorb some water, but it wouldn't be enough to stop you from dehydrating. A gallon of water is a lot of water considering we only need to consume 2.5 quarts, or just over half a gallon, per day depending on individual needs. By Jean-Claude's meter, we would never have to consume water. It is interesting to note that during my looking up info for all this, I found a Danish group did do a study, albeit a small and no control study, to test an old myth of getting drunk by absorption of alcohol through the skin. As you can probably guess, it was confirmed a myth.

Well I hope that answers your question.

Immunize: Flu shot protection

There are so many articles and memes that are passed around and it's hard to know sometimes what we should actually be concerned about.

While on the subject, this is actually one of the most important posts that I can make here on Blogger.

GO GET YOUR FLU SHOT!

If you don't want to do it for your own protection, do it for those who aren't able to protect themselves.

The flu shot does not mean that you will NOT get the flu. There are no guarantees, but chances are, it will be in a milder form. I took it this year (I've had it every year) as a preventative so I will not get horribly ill or infect others who may have a weaker immune system.

I understand that other health guru's tell you that you're injecting poison into your body and the government wants to keep us all sick (note my sarcasm) but it's still the right thing to do. It is horrifying to know that parents are not even getting their children vaccinated.

So I will say it again....

GO GET YOUR FLU SHOT!

Get it from your doctor, pharmacist, clinic, community center, or wherever it is available.

Take the time to view some informative links that are posted below:

Hopefully some of your fears have lessened and you're ready to roll up your arm or at least get your kids vaccinated. It's too important not to mention, especially as the sneezing-coughing-runny nose season sneaks up way too quickly.

If I have changed even a few minds, this blog post was worth it. :)

To Squat Or Not: Squatty Potty Review

As a society, we are constantly being bombarded with the ideas that we are doing everything wrong in our lives. We eat too much, we don’t chew our food well enough, we don’t get enough sleep, and, as of late, what we do behind closed doors is now under scrutiny.

No, I am not meaning the birds and the bees (sex), I am talking about the good old number 1 & number 2 (urination and defecation).

So I was online recently and came across an interesting advertisement called Squatty Potty Curiosity got the better of me and I decided to take a look at the video at the website. In a nut shell, the site claims that the natural squat position is beneficial for us and the more common sitting at a 90 degree angle poses risks for health problems.

Squatty Potty a stool that is designed to elevate the feet and legs to “allow greater hip flexion and straightening of the anorectal canal.” It is recommended for everyone, too, especially those who may suffer from a variety of conditions like constipation, IBS, pelvic floor issues, hemorrhoids, etc.

You can freely read all the science-type facts and the various publications that support this concept; which are on the website. I won’t go into all those details.

Intrigued by what I had read, though, I decided to write the company and ask for a Squatty Potty, so I could do a review on the product. Was I actually going to the bathroom incorrectly all of these years? Are we all actually doing it wrong?

I received a pleasant response back and, within a couple of weeks, I had a plastic white, 7-inch Squatty Potty Ecco Toilet Stool to test out.

Sharing the news with a few people, who really thought I was off my rocker, I decided to see what all the fuss was about.

So far a month has passed. Keep in mind, what works for one may not work for another.

To start off, the design of this particular toilet stool is a little awkward. Even though it says that it wraps around any standard toilet, and is easily stored when not in use, it wasn’t quite the case.

Our bathrooms are small, so perhaps if you have larger ones, this would work better. Anyhow, I tried to put it under our upstairs toilet, and I agree it does wrap around snuggly, but every time my boyfriend had to go in, he would bang right into it. So it became more of a hindrance entering the bathroom, which was a definite negative.

Approaching the porcelain throne with this new device to try out was an interesting time. The way it works is that you comfortably sit down in your usual position, bring the Squatty Potty out from underneath, and then elevate your legs and feet. As you do this, you are now put in the natural squatting position and you can go about your business.

The posture position didn’t feel natural at all, and even though you are supposed to ‘relax’ it’s difficult to do so.

Like anything new, it does take a few times to adjust, and finally, after a few times of situating my body right, it became second-nature.

*Funny side note: my boyfriend decided to humour me and try it out. Sadly, he ended up almost falling into the toilet by elevating his legs onto the stool because of the awkwardness of how his posture was supposed to be. Hygienically, that’s a no-no, and so Squatty Potty was simply for me to continue to experiment with.

My results: I found an immense amount of pressure that was really uncomfortable for the first few times using this product (I have pelvic floor dysfunction, so my muscles don't coordinate properly).  It does mention that for most people, “the difference is immediate, while some bodies take about a week to adjust, relax and get things moving.”

Consistently using it, the pressure fluctuated a bit, and I was able to squat like a champ. As far as having faster and more complete eliminations, I did see some positive changes. But that could have been assisted with the fact that I have been consciously added more fiber to my diet and working on my pelvic floor exercises. So I don’t see any casual link here, just a correlation.

I didn’t really see a huge difference using the stool, and after stopping its usage to document any changes, I felt pretty much the same. Others may experience different results, but I don’t believe this product was all the hype that it claimed to be. Note, you can also stack a pile of books to get that elevation, as a cheaper alternative and it works great!

Regardless of how you choose to use the can/john/loo, or whatever name you call it, one thing I definitely agree with is the idea of their slogan: “healthy colon, happy life!”

This review was probably TMI (too much information). But, these are important things to discuss. Maybe not at the dinner table, or on a first date, but eventually it’s a conversation that you are guaranteed to have at some point in your life.

Neuro Biofeedback: Mapping The Brain

Talking to Lucy the night before she was going in for her Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG), she was relatively calm. Washing her hair with baby shampoo, as advised, brought her back to a time where she truly felt nurtured. “I felt like I was a new-born baby, being gently caressed and protected, without a care in world,” stated Lucy.

The next day, I was out of the house around 8:30 am to meet up with Lucy for her appointment at 9 am. I must say that having staff that are friendly can make a world of difference, especially to those who suffer from a variety of conditions. The simple “hello” is often taken for granted and I wish that more places were so reassuring and caring. The receptionist had a smile on her face and even though she could have been having the most miserable start to her day, she treated Lucy like a person, not just another number. It was awesome to see.

So what is QEEG? Digital technology is used to measure electrical patterns at the surface of the scalp (called brain mapping), not the structure (like in an EEG), which reflect cortical electrical activity or what is known as “brain waves.”

In a nutshell, it’s an assessment tool that clinicians use to detect and identify areas of dysregulation in a person’s brain. So if you’re suffering from sleep problems, emotional or even behavioural difficulties, this helps to understand the cause of symptoms and ultimately puts a plan of action in place to get you back on track.

Next, a full statistical analysis is done comparing the person’s brain wave profile to the norm for his/her age and gender. This is where stats is handy and the dreaded course that everyone wants to avoid taking at university. However, in this scope of work, it’s a must.

The concept is interesting and according to Lucy, all the electrodes that were hooked up to her head, “made her feel like Frankenstein’s monster.” She also said that, “we joked about putting my photo on Facebook.”

When I asked Lucy about any discomfort, she said that it wasn’t painful at all, the baby shampoo just allowed for the electrodes to activate and function on the screen properly, since any other shampoo contains problematic chemicals that could interfere. She just had to follow some specific tasks, but a majority of the process kept her in a relaxed state.

It also helped that she was told what would go on every step of the way, a little background history on the procedure, and of course, some comic relief to lighten the mood. If she needed to stop for any reason, she was welcomed to. With two clinicians in the room making sure everything was accurate and running smoothly, the whole session took about an hour. “It’s great to find people who genuinely want to see me get better,” said Lucy.

After the session, Lucy seemed to be in fine spirits. Unfortunately, her post-traumatic stress seems to come back at very random times. Sometimes it’s the abuse she suffered from for countless years, other times, it’s the medical trauma she’s endured. It takes a toll on her physical and mental wellbeing, not to mention her loved ones.

“I keep trying to push forward and not let all these memories consume me, but sometimes it’s a losing battle and I just want to scream, but the only thing I can do is cry,” she says.

It took quite a few days to settle her down and so I wanted to give her all the support and time she needed. She’s still pretty on edge in general, but trying to do her best to realize that she’s not going to be abandoned and no matter what, as Maroon 5′s song goes, “She will be loved.”

It takes several hours to analyse the results and then compile everything for discussion, so Lucy will be back next week to figure out the results and where to go from here.

SPAtacular at Coral Medical Health Spa

There’s nothing quite like being pampered. Some may feel it is overrated, but that’s probably because they haven’t engaged in a true “spa” experience. Well, I think I could probably change the minds of many, after spending time at Coral Medical Health Spa here in Windsor, Ontario. I must say that I was a little nervous going there because you just never know what to expect, but upon opening up the door, I was greeted with a smile and a hello by the receptionist. She guided me to the massage chairs (what a way to wait; doctors, take note!) where I could relax and offered me a beverage until the aesthetician came out to get me. They also have a lovely waterfall right in front, which really created an atmosphere of total bliss.

After filling out some routine paperwork (known allergies, medical history, purpose of my visit, what to expect before/after services, etc) before I knew it, Jena (the aesthetician) came out and introduced herself. She led me down a long hallway into a very quaint room, while dimming the lights and turning on some meditative music. I was very pleased to see how impeccably clean everything was. After a short discussion on what she would be doing and if I had any questions, I proceeded to the comfy bed, in which I would spend the next 2 hours inside.

I was given Coral’s “therapeutic facial” treatment, along with a neck, hand and arm massage. Since I have sensitive skin, Jena designed a customized facial that would not only hydrate my skin, but also help heal and repair it too. The products she used were from a high-quality skincare line called Dermalogica and were the perfect choice. Every step of a skin care analysis, called face-mapping to exfoliation, was done with absolute care and precision. The hot towels that she applied to my face were soothing and I must say, her massage technique was like the touch of an angel. During the treatment, Jena was more than happy to answer any questions I had about my skin or even just about skincare in general.

At the end, Jena gently awoke me (I dozed off a few times because of being utterly relaxed) to let me know that I could take my time getting up and she would meet me in the hallway. Coming out, my skin felt rejuvenated and smooth as silk. We talked about her recommendations to keep my skin in good shape now and throughout the rest of my life. She was extremely knowledgeable and I was surprised at how few products I really needed, compared to what I had experienced with other spa places.

I was also given a goody bag that was filled with all of their other services and coupons for future visits and a great incentive for 25% off for any referrals.

For some people, spa treatments often feel like luxury items that are only affordable on special occasions or for the affluent clientele. All of Coral Spa services are very reasonably priced for the quality and professionalism that you will receive. Don’t spend money on your beloved Tim Horton’s coffees and late-night fast food jaunts that only give you a temporary fix. Save up those coins and bills and invest in yourself and give your loved ones a day at the spa, Coral Medical Health Spa!

Below you can read my Q&A with Ken Sherman, who is the General Manager at Coral

With all the beauty trends that continually come out in popular media publications, do you follow a certain protocol when deciding which products/treatments will be offered?

(Ken Sherman, General Manager at Coral) – Absolutely! Before we consider whether to bring on new technology, treatments and/or products to our menu, we make sure to research the treatment/product in detail. We first determine where it’s made, origin of ingredients and technology, how long the company has been in business, third party certification and reviews, and first-hand accounts from other clinics that use the products/technology. We gather this information to determine if the products/technology is really effective, safe and uncomplicated. The next step is to invite a representative from the company to come in and give us a formal presentation on the products/technology and answer any questions we may have. During the presentation members of our team will sample a treatment if it’s new technology we’re looking at, and/or take samples of the products home to use for the duration of a skin cycle. If all goes well, we proceed to offer complimentary treatments to our clients that we feel to be most suitable for the treatment, and get their feedback. Lastly, once we decide that this treatment is safe, effective, with great outcomes, we will train and certify our professional team on how to use and recommend the products/technology and encourage everyone on the team to use it.

“Upselling” is a common sales tactic that is well-known in any establishment, especially when it comes to aesthetics, health and wellness. I will admit that I’ve been duped into spending money on products that I didn’t really need nor would add any benefit to my life because of fear-mongering and clever persuasion. How is your staff trained to assure a client is being offered an honest experience?

(KS) – Our team is trained from day one to offer only those treatments and products that would benefit their clients. If we feel that someone is making recommendations just for the sake of a sale, they will quickly realize that Coral Medical Health Spa is not the right place for them. It’s something we take very seriously! In business (regardless of the industry), when you make empty promises and recommend things just for the sake of profit, you may do well initially, but quickly people catch on and the reputation of the business is tarnished. In fact our mission statement reads as follows: “Our mission is to provide the residents of Windsor and Essex County the absolute best in age prevention services, day spa services and medical cosmetic treatments available, by focusing on restoring youth, enhancing beauty and improving health outcomes through disease prevention and health promotion, under the guidance of specialized health care professionals, working in close partnership with their clients, in a way that exemplifies value, honesty, integrity, and above all, care and commitment to everyone involved.

While looking through your website and seeing a variety of services, I am very impressed with the fact that Coral offers a Women’s Center that focuses on prevention, treatment in many area’s of a woman’s life, especially chronic pain. Can you explain more about what someone can expect when walking-in the first time? Why does addressing the holistic aspect play such a vital role in women’s overall health?

(KS) – This is a great question! Dr. Sherman our founder and Medical Director, began her professional career as a family physician (she continues to do this today). Dr. Sherman’s focus has always been disease prevention and her passion was working with Women. Prevention is so important, combining a medical approach with nutrition, exercise and stress reduction to improve health outcomes rather than just masking the symptoms. Dr. Sherman’s focus and passion was combined to create the Women’s Health Centre. When clients join the centre, Dr. Sherman and the nurse practitioner perform a detailed health assessment including a full physical, blood work (in our lab on-site) and lifestyle analysis. After the assessment is complete, Dr. Sherman together with the client devise a lifestyle plan which may include medical treatment, nutrition programming with nutritional supplements, and stress reduction techniques. With the medical spa we can actually offer all of these treatments under one roof… by utilizing our nutrition and lifestyle programs, personal training studio (on-site) and day spa for pampering and relaxation. Once the program begins, the client will come for regular follow-up visits with Dr. Sherman, the Nurse Practitioner and Lifestyle Educator to monitor their progress and make adjustments as needed.

Are there any plans to have a Men’s Center to address the growing concerns for the male population?

(KS) – The same concerns that exist for women also do for men. And, to that effect all of the same programs we offer in the Women’s Health Centre, we offer for men as well. In fact, many of our clients in the centre have brought in their spouses and significant others for treatment! This is very exciting for us, as we continue to grow our male clientele and offer more treatments and products directly to them.

In all your years as a business owner, has there been any inspirational stories from clients that you can share at Coral that really affected you in a positive way?
(KS) – Too many to list. We have had hundreds of clients tell us how much better they look and feel after they come to see us. Specifically, I recall one client that starting coming to the centre as a patient and slowly began utilizing the other services we offer. She was in a very unhealthy state when she started. On various medications, over weight and overly stressed. We worked closely with her and with the lifestyle and nutrition programs, the personal training and medical aesthetic treatments we offer, she lost over 50 pounds, stopped taking the cholesterol and blood pressure medication and freshened up her look. She told us that she hasn’t felt this way since she was in her twenties!

Being in business since 2005, and building a solid reputation within the community, do you feel there are any aspects that can be improved upon, as the needs of individuals change?
(KS) – Absolutely, there are always ways to improve… we constantly survey our clients and our team to get their feedback on their experience with our company, and what we can add or do better. Furthermore we want to know that we’re delivering the absolute best client experience we can! That means maintaining a clean and sterile environment, friendly and courteous team, safe and effective treatment outcomes and a pricing strategy to allow nearly every individual to take part in what we do. In addition it’s always important to be aware of what’s happening in the industry and be aware of trends. By researching carefully we know what we can add and do to improve.

a nice area to relax

*Update: Buyer beware!  I had some reactions with the skincare products that were recommended to me and I must say that I was not pleased with the customer service at Coral when their tone was completely different and only pushed to buy MORE products. I went ahead and contacted the actual company to figure out a amicable solution, as the products were incredibly expensive! They were very quick to handle the situation professionally and contacted Coral, who I will say was very displeased that I went directly to their supplier. Needless to say, I will not return to Coral for any treatments, nor can I truthfully recommend them due to this unfortunate incident. Also, I find that some of their treatments and products that they carry are very questionable and not a business I can support. Customer service is key to any establishment, and they surely blew this one.

Addiction: The Couponer's Bubble

Do you remember the old saying of “there are no free lunches in this world?” It holds some truth, but in the consumer world, it’s becoming easier to obtain items for free or ridiculously low costs. It’s no surprise now that some people will go to any length to try and outsmart the system.

Part 2 of my couponing series will take you into the world of coupon addiction. It is a dark place that can rob you of your life, just like any other compulsive behaviour such as smoking, drinking, drugs, and more. The clinical definition of addiction by the DSM-IV-TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) can be debated though and is often rejected by those who are suffering. Whether you meet one criteria or all of them, sometimes your conscience may be able to withstand the fraudulent behaviours because you truly believe that you’re saving money for yourself and your family. However, there is a very fine line between saving and scheming.

Every day, people scour the stores for the best deals and of course, those red-hot coupons. You’ll join up on sites that allow you to print out money-saving coupons on favourite products or even ones you’ve never tried before. Other times, you’ll be able to have certain websites mail you out coupons to your home address. Social media has also become another great avenue for obtaining coupons, discounts and freebies.  However, when does hunting for a bargain turn toxic?

About a week ago, I had a surprising letter from a woman who did not want to disclose her real name to me but was very adamant about sharing her story. So for the purpose of this blog, I will refer to her as “Natasha.”

This is a year for Natasha to mark on her calendar. She had the biggest birthday bash, as she celebrated her 37th recently with close friends and family. She was overjoyed with a simple dinner at one of her favourite restaurants in the city of Windsor, and for the fact that she had finally left her home for a calculated time of 2 hours and 15 minutes, after a number of years in isolation.

Natasha’s story began like many others. Being a stay-at-home mom of 3 had its rewards but Natasha often felt really bored with her life and began searching for new ways to break out of the mommy role. Her husband worked long hours and so any quality time would be sparse, except for the occasional weekends, when he would make it a habit to go out with his buddies and leave her alone with 3 attention-seeking children. Sometimes he’d come home, blitzed out of his mind, smelling like stale perfume and other times, he never came home at all. Frustrated, Natasha recalls one night where she put the children to bed and went to the living room and cried for what seemed like hours.

Trying to make sense of her situation, her eyes glazed over the computer screen that was in the corner of the room. Before she knew it, her tears had turned to laughter, as she entered the virtual world known as the Internet.  Being an amateur with computers, she successfully navigated her way and carefully typed in the search box of Google “bored mommies.” Thousands of search results came up and Natasha was overwhelmed, yet relieved that there were other people like her who were constantly stuck at home and unappreciated by their significant others. Clicking on each page, Natasha felt a sense of belonging and began to sign up to different forums.

Natasha recalls a renewed zest for life, an exhilaration that she hadn't felt in years. So every night, after the kids went to bed, Natasha would log onto the computer and seek out more groups to join. She would stay up practically all night long, chatting with others and eventually finding an extreme coupon group that would soon consume her life. Scrolling through a few sites that had products she liked, Natasha decided to sign up and see whether anything would actually arrive at her home. The excitement of receiving a confirmation e-mail was beginning to feel more fulfilling than sex.

Only a few months into joining and Natasha was hooked. Couponing was her escape from the mundane existence that she lived, day in and day out. Her doorbell would not stop ringing as delivery drivers would stop by and drop off, yet another parcel. She was amazed at how good she felt. She got tips and tricks on how to get more than one sent to her home and started to create multiple e-mail accounts. Eventually, she had 25 different accounts that she could log into.  Trips to the grocery store were unbelievable, as she would pay virtually nothing for her groceries. Any chance at saving money, she’d grab the whole wall of tear pads and stuff them into her purse so no one else could get the deals she was getting. She even started buying up items she wouldn’t even use, just because it was on sale at a good price. She did hand out some coupons to customers on occasion, but this was only to ease her mind of what she was doing. Natasha felt no shame in doing this, but looking back, she knew this was worse than stealing.

Unfortunately, it only got worse. Natasha started to neglect household duties and there were many times that her husband had to come home from work because she forgot to pick up their kids from school or extra-curricular activities.  The distance in Natasha’s marriage worsened and she began getting calls from the school about absenteeism. Not fazed by any of it, Natasha continued to be on the computer even more. Sitting and waiting for the next freebie, ignoring her baby’s cries and visiting the grocery store almost daily to stock up on items that she knew she had plenty of.  Some evenings, she would go and do something called “dumpster diving” to find coupons and other papers that she couldn’t get her hands on. After a while, she would cautiously wait until a neighbour put out the red or blue boxes, take them home, and rummage through. Sometimes Natasha would forget to give them back. She started to collect them and realized she could make some money selling the used recycled boxes.

To give you an idea of her stockpile, it consisted of: 300 packages of toilet paper, 150 cases of canned goods, 76 shampoos, 45 boxes of  pasta, 200 deodorants, 200 loafs of bread, 400 bottles of various over-the-counter prescription medications, 200 boxes of Kleenex, 120 boxes of cereal, and much more.  The family could have lived extremely well for the next few years without having to buy very much, but the rush was too thrilling to stop and so someone had to slam on the brakes.

The most embarrassing and pivotal moment for Natasha was when she stepped into the grocery store and was immediately escorted to the manager’s office.  To her surprise, the store had been watching her for months now. Her devious rearrangements of items so others could not get them, the loads of products she would place into her cart and pay nothing for because she had many free product coupons for, the excessive amount of tear pads she’d collect without leaving any for other consumers…all the evidence was there and Natasha was finally caught.  Thankfully the store manager was sympathetic and did not press charges. However, she was banned from the store.

She drove home from the horrible incident and in a sudden rage, she destroyed her stockpile. As canned goods smashed to the ground and shampoo bottles dripped out onto the marble-tiled floor, Natasha unplugged her computer and threw the monitor against the wall.

Couponing was Natasha’s saviour, or so she thought. What she didn’t bargain for was the devastating aftermath.  Her husband left and took their 3 kids. Natasha told me that the moment her husband demanded full custody, she couldn’t even muster the strength to fight for her children. She knew that she was an unfit mother and needed help.

Up until very recently, Natasha lived a life of total isolation. The outside world did not exist. She refers to herself at times as the “Couponer in a Bubble,” which makes total sense. With the help of on-going therapy and some extremely supportive friends and family, Natasha is slowly rebuilding her life. The guilt still consumes her but she was naΓ―ve thinking that she could get away with everything.  What she thought was a fun hobby turned into a nightmare she will never forget.

Natasha has deactivated all of her accounts now. Shopping for her is still a huge source of anxiety and so she only shops with a trusted family member or friend. Although she has setbacks, Natasha is proud to say that she no longer is part of any coupon group.

My closing thoughts: Addiction of any sort can be debilitating and so admitting you have a problem is really the first step in getting better. It’s not an easy road but in the end it is worth every penny. Couponing can be very harmless and a wonderful way to save money. It’s also great to try out new products and help others who may be struggling. However, people go way too far.

So the next time you go shopping and see a stash of coupons just waiting for you to grab, take a moment and realize what you’re doing because you never know what price you actually pay, until it’s too late.
