Tribute to Houdini at Windsor Comedy Club

We had an amazing turnout for our first Proshow event with Windsor Comedy Club, a hot spot here in downtown Windsor, where you'll often find comedians from all walks of life, hitting the stage each and every week to perform with or without a brewski in hand.

Getting the creative juices flowing, why not offer something a little different this time to adult patrons and see what a little magic can do.

What's that saying, team work makes the dream work? It sure does.

And so we introduced Out of the Box - A Tribute to Houdini and brought our friends, Silk Echos, along for the ride to open up the show and share their beautiful voices with the crowd. Nothing better than collaborating with local performers.

๐ŸŽฉ"Out of the Box" A Tribute to Houdini! ๐ŸŽฉ

Good For The Soul: WSO with LaKisha Jones at the Capitol Theatre

We chose to get balcony seats so it was a nice view.
Quick snap before the performance on Sat. Sept 23, 2023 - 8 pm.

It was a fun evening out at The Capitol Theatre this past weekend here in Windsor, Ontario. There is such nostalgia entering the building as it brought back great memories of a really special Valentine's date concert experience with Bill way back in 2009, which seems like so long ago!  Since that time, we've been back many times to enjoy various performances.

The Windsor Symphony Orchestra never disappoints with another wonderful evening of music. These musicians are really hard-working and so gifted with their instruments and performances.  To elevate the experience further, Flint Michigan's powerhouse of soul, LaKisha Jones crossed onto Canadian soil to share her beautiful voice with all of us.

It was a bit of a surprise not to see Robert Franz conducting on the stage that night, but his Assistant Conductor, Francisco Hernรกndez Bolaรฑos took his place and definitely held his own with his comedic charm with the audience between sets and of course, his passionate conducting style.

LaKisha Jones was truly a sight to behold, every time she appeared on the stage in a different vibrant outfit. Her grace, confidence and voice through every song showed what a superstar she truly is.

A few highlights:

๐Ÿ‘‰The unique musical style of the WSO performing 2001 - Space Odyssey

๐Ÿ‘‰James Bond medley - another nostalgic moment for me, as I had a previous online handle, known as 007!

๐Ÿ‘‰I Will Always Love You  - I was transported back to The Bodyguard soundtrack. LaKisha knocked it out of the park with her vocal range and emotional performance.

Celebrating the opening of Windsor Symphony Orchestra's Toldo Pops Concert Series, there's plenty more fantastic performances to come that no doubt will earn our R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

New Lease on Life: Q&A with Happy Little Crowd Productions

In just a short while, Happy Little Crowd Productions has become a well-known name in the Windsor Ontario music scene and Owner, Shawn Vandenberg is on a mission (and clearly succeeding!) to bring the very best in live indie and experimental tunes to our area. He's thriving in an industry that he's absolutely passionate about and I'm excited to share this Q&A with you.

1. How did you get started with Happy Little Crowd Productions and is this a solo operation or do you have a team working with you?

I grew up always wanting to be around music but for various reasons, I denied myself that. I was just past 30 years old, working at RBC, doing loans and investments when I realized that I had to have the convo with myself, “is this really what you want to do for the rest of your life?”.

I started brainstorming different industries that I enjoyed and could get into. I got it down to something in music or fitness. I really didn’t think I could get involved in music at such a late stage in my life (yes 30 is late to just start out in music) so I decided to try fitness. I became a personal trainer which led me to Windsor.

I was always thinking about music though, so I finally started asking coworkers where to go in Windsor to get involved in music. I was pointed to Phog Lounge. That was right around the time The Rondo was opening. Tom had put out a request for anyone to go and help with the “building process” of The Rondo. I didn’t know anyone in town but figured this was the perfect way to get to know people.

So I volunteered. Eventually that led to me being the janitor, then working the door…then bartending…then being asked if I had any interest in helping book shows. I had never thought about that before, but I gave it some thought and decided to try. I knew nothing, so everything was learning on the fly.

Eventually, I decided that if booking agents were going to take me more seriously, I should start my own company. So that is how Happy Little Crowd Productions started. I am running it by myself, although, I’ve had a tremendous amount of support and help along the way.

๐Ÿ’

2.  What excites you most about finding new bands to bring to the Windsor-Essex County area?

Honestly, just knowing how excited the fans are and how much it makes their day better. Just seeing how hard bands work, it’s an amazing feeling to give them a chance to play for people and gain new fans.

๐Ÿ’

3.   You come across as a pretty laid-back guy (with a heck of a lot of funky glasses!) who just loves life and all its obscurities.  Is that the vibe you want people to have or were you aiming for something else?

Oh that’s definitely who I am. I have a lot of inner anxiety etc, so I’m not always so even keel haha, but I am definitely known as laid back and easy going. I’ve had an interesting past, and feel like I’ve been given a brand new lease on life by working in music. I don’t want to waste a second.

If you’re looking for some funky glasses yourself, check out The Walkerville Optical on Ottawa Street. It’s a top-notch place. I’ll never go anywhere else now.

๐Ÿ’

4. Tell me something about the music promoter biz that the average person would probably find a little shocking.

People might be surprised when bands have guarantees. So as a promoter, sometimes I have to guarantee a certain amount of money before they play (makes sense when bands are touring). I have to hope I sell enough tickets to cover their cost, as well as the other costs associated with the show (sound, promotion, opening support artists, etc). So, some shows that look like a success when you walk in as the “concert goer” are actually losing money. It’s something I remind myself of when I can choose between sitting on the couch or going to show. They truly need your support.

๐Ÿ’

 5.  I saw that you have a lot of upcoming talent coming to places like Phog Lounge and Meteor, which is awesome.  What makes these venues ideal?

For me, it’s the built-in crowd and vibe they already have and the location. It’s where I first started, and who I first started working with. I just feel connected to them. Plus, Meteor truly has great sound and a big stage.

Make sure to connect with Shawn to see all the exciting artists/bands he has coming to town next and for any business inquiries!  Support local. :)

On The Road Again: Greater Windsor Concert Band

We've been enjoying a lot of live music lately, so on Sunday evening after dinner, we gathered up our lawn chairs, water, and bug spray and headed down to Reaume Park, here in Windsor, Ontario and found a quiet little spot to sit in the shade.

GWCB - Greater Windsor Concert Band welcomed everyone back to enjoy an evening of music with the theme of "On the Road Again."  They really put on a wonderful show and I don't think we could have asked for better weather that night.

If you didn't know:

"The Greater Windsor Concert Band is a community group of musicians dedicated to bringing wind band and concert band music into our community. We give musicians of all ages and walks of life a place to practice their instruments in an ensemble setting and offer many chances to perform live in front of audiences."

Here is a little bit of footage put together to enjoy! I bet you recognize some of the songs.

Visit their website to learn more about the band, find dates/times of performances throughout the 2022 season and more!

More Than 9 Lives: A Street Cat Named Bob Movie Review

Addiction doesn’t just come in the form of drugs and alcohol, it is prominent in food, gamblingsocial media, religion, etc... We can be addicted to just about anything. How far that goes depends on many factors that each of us are ultimately held responsible for.

A single thought can be harmless. However, it often begins this way. You may have a genetic predisposition or you may not, but when a triggering event, or multiple ones happen over time, a pseudo-harmless thought can spiral into chaos. Nothing begins to matter anymore. It's just you and the addiction.

The intense craving and the inability to think about anything else but feeding our addiction takes over our already fragile mind. We give into the euphoria, even if it’s for a split second to feel the illusion of happiness, and then we are warped back into reality, stricken with grief, depression, shame, and all the other unpleasant feelings that lead us desperately again into our next high. The cycle continues until we can let go or we sadly die trying. In our minds, we feel that if we are not actively pursuing our addiction, we are forever lost.

I was inspired to write about our viewing of A Street Cat Named Bob, a best-selling international book made into film. It is based on the true story of James Bowen, a heroin addict who fatefully meets a four-legged ginger cat, who affectionately  becomes known as his life-saving furry pal, Bob.   Bring on the tissues!

Luke Treadaway plays the role of James, a heroin addict who is facing the same fate as his friend Baz, who has overdosed for the last time. Trying to withstand the pressures of getting one more hit in, repairing his relationship with his father and somehow rebuilding his life, one night, James finds a four-legged cat rustling around in the hallway and that’s really where the story begins to take shape.

There is such a beautiful bond that forms and although not everyone’s journey is like James, it gives a sense of hope. Another heartfelt part of the movie is James’ unlikely human friendship and brief love interest with Betty (played by Ruta Gedmintas), James’s quirky and lovable neighbour. She is not all rainbows and sunshine though. Underneath, she is still holding onto grief from her brother’s death, and so that adds a heightened element to the story on what level of support we can honestly take on, even when witnessing such suffering.

Healing can begin once we face our deepest wounds, but it’s a long and messy road to even feeling half alive again. For some, it takes hitting rock bottom, and for others, it can be a life of balancing the good days and any relapses that happen. We are rooting for James all the way through this film, to at least be given the chance to live out loud with confidence again, as he is working so damn hard through every obstacle tossed his way - totally relatable on some level? Heck ya.

The movie shows many barriers that addicts will continue to face, as well as the toxic “not in my backyard” phenomena that exists especially with recovery involving methadone hubs and harm reduction clinics in residential areas. There are plenty of moments as well where the human condition is explored through the loving relationship that James has with Bob, his ginger cat that won’t leave his side and makes him feel seen, where alone busking on the streets of London, others would make James feel invisible.

Our connections with humans can be limited but there is something extra special about the love shared that is also evidence-based between humans and animals.

The music is also a high point in the movie, as we see this guitar strumming bloke, riding his bike with a cat on his shoulder bringing smiles and hope to all that pass by. Satellite Moments is truly special, along with Second Time Around and Don't Give Up

If you can take anything from this film, it is the fact that sometimes helping to save someone else’s life, ends up saving ours too.

*Sadly, Bob passed away in 2020 but will never be forgotten

Raising Up Caesars Windsor on a Cold, Cold Night with Josh Groban

Hailing from Los Angeles, Josh Groban is a multi-platinum, Grammy Award-nominated singer, songwriter, and actor who continues to sell-out concert auditoriums all around the world. If you’ve never heard him before, have you been living under a rock?! No seriously, ask a friend, post on your social media or even do a quick Google search to find out the man behind the voice because I am certain he will not disappoint you.

On Sunday night, I had the pleasure to have tickets on the Colosseum floor at Caesars Windsor to enjoy an authentic Josh Groban experience with a great friend, who warned me she would be breaking out the tissues.

Josh stepped onto the stage in his eggplant purple-coloured suit and shiny black shoes, with a beautiful orchestra and choir, as well as other musicians. The collaboration of music throughout the entire evening performance especially with some bongo playing and impeccable drumming was delightful.

Josh was actually quite a jovial, quirky guy who didn’t take himself too seriously (at least not on stage that night!) but the moment he started singing, it was if he was transported into another world and took your hand to invite you in with him. His vocal range was so impressive and when he hit those high notes, it gave me goose bumps.

Josh did a number of songs from his albums, as well as paid homage to other music artists who have inspired him. Several personal favourites were Granted, Pure Imagination and Play. Of course, he did his most known hits of You Raise Me Up and Don’t Give Up.

There was also a surprise performance by a random audience member who was called up from the crowd. The man didn’t come up on stage, but shook Josh’s hand from below and with a slight hesitancy and probably a bit of jitters, agreed to sing. He knew most of the words to Where You Are and the idea was for him to start and then he’d be giving the microphone back to Josh. He went solo on this one as Josh playfully tried to reach out to get the mic back during parts of the song. What a voice! We have so much talent here. Josh stood on stage in awe and amazement and let this man have his moment.

On a side note, if you go back to the Ally Mcbeal days of television, during the prom scene, you’ll recognize a little Joshie on the show who belts out the melodic tune You’re Still You. He decided to share that fun tidbit with everyone and proceeded to perform the song with such a heart-felt vulnerability.

In a world where we have so much divisiveness between each other and the increased anxiety being thrusted upon us by every news outlet, the classic song, Bridge Over Troubled Waters seemed totally fitting for Josh to sing at the end. It brought a sense of unity, love and even for just one night, a little bit of extra happiness.

During what may seem like insurmountable obstacles and unimaginable sadness at times in our lives, we honour this message that Josh reminded us of tonight: “don’t give up because you are loved.”

Kick up your heels for a good time: Billy Ray Cyrus at Caesars Windsor

photo by Teuta Shabani, Caesars Windsor

I cannot say that I have ever been a big country music fan. Sure I don’t mind listening to the odd toe-tapping, honky-tonk song, but if you asked me what I listen to most days, it wouldn’t be this genre. I must admit though that I was a little excited when I saw that Billy Ray Cyrus was coming to Caesars Windsor and it seemed like a good time to dust off our proverbial cowboy hats and boots, and mosey on out for a fun time with my husband, also named Bill, but no, I don’t call him Billy.

You knew it was going to be a good time as Billy Ray Cyrus entered the stage, complete with his casual cowboy chic, sleek straight hair, signature cowboy hat, and flashed the brightest smile to the crowd. He started the night by channelling his inner Johnny Cash and singing “Folsom Prison Blues.” A great energy hit the crowd and it didn’t stop from there.

If you recall Billy Ray Cyrus was also an actor back in the early 2000’s on a show called Doc, which ran 4 seasons long. For the nostalgic moment, he performed his tv intro hit “Stand Still” which had the audience on their feet shouting the chorus.

“Wher’m I Gonna Live”, “Could’ve Been Me”,  and a heart-warming tribute to the veterans both here and abroad with “Some Gave All”, were a few other great hits.

Two huge highlights were Billy’s  own style of “Johnny B Good” and the well-known party song by Georgia Satellites, “Keep your Hands to Yourself.” Oh and who could forget the keyboardist showing off his skill to the synth sounds of “Jump” by Van Halen.

There were screams from groups of women as the start of the monster hit, “Achy Breaky Heart”, began. Everyone from little kids to seniors (it was an all-ages show) stood up to dance and sway. There were also plenty of teasing moments as Billy pseudo-tossed his cowboy hat and jacket to the crowd. He did actually toss out some t-shirts though, which I’m sure a few lucky ladies will wear to bed tonight without washing to preserve the fact that Billy’s hand and sweat touched those shirts first.

Even though Lil Nas wasn’t able to make the stage this time, Billy Ray gave a salute and wished him well, as he carried on with “Old Town Road” with his band. You could tell the new fans from the old ones just by the sheer joy or confusion on their faces when the bass sound came on and thumped the seats for the entire duration of the song. In all honesty, and you can always expect that when you read my reviews,  the low pitch of the bass, along the loud guitars was deafening. I know some people like that style and yes the song is catchy, but I had to start moving towards the exit.  Thankfully, the rest of the concert was a delight.

Although Billy Ray did mention having some problems crossing the border, we’re happy he made it safe and sound to Windsor to entertain us all, otherwise that probably won’t have left some achy breaky hearts!

Goodness Gracious: The Million Dollar Quartet Returns to Caesars Windsor

Whether you grew up in the 50’s, listening to Blues Suede Shoes or you had a Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On in your later life, let’s take you back to the iconic date of December 4, 1956 in Memphis, Tennessee. Take a trip down memory lane to Sun Records, where Sam Phillips was always on the hunt for his next big star. The Million Dollar Quartet (Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins) got together for a jam session that reunited everyone for a night of excitement, revelation and of course, rock and roll!

Johnny Cash (Steven Lasiter) definitely gave it his all with hits like Folsom Prison Blues and Walk The Line.  His deep baritone sound gave chills down your spine and he oozed masculinity portraying The Man in Black himself, Johnny Cash.

Carl Perkins (Nathan Burke) gave great vocal performances and played up the manly role to poke fun at the eccentric Jerry Lee any chance he could. A little bit of information that you may not know was that Blue Suede Shoes was written by Carl! Elvis took it a few steps further and had the vocal chops and moves to turn the song into a mega-hit.

Elvis has left the building… Jacob Barton made The King proud with his rendition of Hound Dog, Peace in the Valley and many others. He had the swivelling hips but I couldn’t catch the iconic snarl. With his girlfriend, Dyanne, (Taylor Kraft) stepping up on stage to the mic, her sultry sound singing Fever may have had a lot of audience members a little hot under the collar.

There is no doubt in my mind that Jerry Lee Lewis (Trevor Dorner) stole the show with Great Balls of Fire. His energy from the moment he put his fingers on the piano to the end where we was literally jumping off the piano had the audience cheering him on.  Plus who doesn’t love a quirky performance from someone who exudes that sweet southern charm with a sarcastic bite.

Let’s not forget the Father of Rock N Roll, Sam Phillips (Sean Casey Flanagan) who gave a memorable performance, Jon Rossi who killed it on the drums and bassist Brother Jay (Kroy Presley) who can play the electric and upright bass with ease and poise.

With two incredible encores to finish off the show and sporting some sparkly jackets to finish their individual looks, The Million Dollar Quartet have a bright future ahead and hopefully will be back to Caesars Windsor for more shows in the future – See You Later Alligator!

The human touch of VNV Nation - Victory Not Vengeance

Last night, I was listening to In Defiance, one of my many favourite songs from VNV Nation's Of Faith, Power and Glory album.

Other personal favourites are  Illusion,  PerpetualGratitudeBeloved and Arena.

Within a moment, I was transported back to my days at University, where I took an intro music course. We listened and analyzed music from the tin pan alley era, all the way to electrifying sounds of Led Zeppelin. Our final assignment was to choose any artist/band from any era, and explain why/why not we would consider them a hegemonic force in the music industry. Many students chose icons like Elvis, Madonna or The Beatles. Of course, I chose something rather different; VNV Nation.

I kept this piece of work that I wrote around 2007 and wanted to share on my blog because I was really proud of it. You can see how outdated it is, as I mention "MySpace" but at the time, it was a very powerful media tool.  I also sent a personal note, as well as this enclosed essay to Ronan Harris (lead of VNV Nation) and his partner at the time, Mark Jackson, eons ago, in hopes they may have read it. I'm not sure if it ever reached either of their hands, or it was stacked in the PR bunch.  I'm sure like most artists are sent thousands of e-mails, letters, essays, photos, and more notes of appreciation and gratitude that they could even sift through. However, you know me, i'm that letter-writing kind of muse, so I like to express myself through words and without getting into all the gory details of my battles an traumas, Ronan left a rather large imprint in my heart, in you know.... that life-altering way.

I could blabber on, but I think I will end this here. Below you can read my essay, if you wish to! PS. I got an A from my prof at the time. ;)

A hegemonic force: VNV Nation

VNV Nation may not be a well-known mainstream band, but they have taken a path on which many other groups have been afraid to travel given the competitive nature of the music business.  They have gone their own way by structuring innovative approaches to success.  For this reason, I have chosen them as my essay subject.

Antonio Gramsci’s argument about hegemonic forces states that “new technologies and structures of control by the state and entertainment industries also generate new forms of cultural and political opposition.”  Using his concept, VNV Nation would be considered a hegemonic force.  While they were a part of the entertainment empire at the beginning of their career, they rebelled and are trying to create a new form of musical leadership.

In my analysis, I will look at a number of factors that support my position.  The group name itself has become their signifier of change. I will discuss the creation of their own record label and the musical genre known as Futurepop.   The polysemic nature of their lyrics has allowed powerful messages to be included in their songs that can reach audiences directly through advances in the use of Internet technology in distribution.

VNV Nation is comprised of Irish born-Ronan Harris who is the lead vocalist, composer and lyricist while English born-Mark Jackson played live drums.

VNV Nation's motto itself is their mission statement. The initials of the band stand for “Victory Not Vengeance.” According to their official website, the phrase demands that “one should strive to achieve, not sit in bitter regret.”  The use of the word “victory” is very significant.  It brings forward the image of a war-like battle in which they are empowered to change the music business using their new ideology.  They are casting aside the traditional recording industry approach to end the dominance of the cultural industry.

Like other musical artists and groups, VNV Nation relied at the beginning of their career on record companies to distribute their music. It is very difficult for an artist to develop a unique identity other than the prevailing one or to maintain a high quality level because of the structure of the music business and the necessity to conform. “Major labels work like a stock company to deliver a product which means you're not there to be creative, you're there to produce hits that sell and unless you sell over a certain amount, they dump you.”

The industry is a business after all and there is a need to generate profit by minimizing risk. As their career progressed, VNV Nation became unwilling to conform to mainstream beliefs, values and aesthetics or to be under the control of the musical “gatekeepers” who were interested in a manufactured sound and image. They felt restricted in their ability to express their musical talent.

Over time, VNV Nation developed a different philosophy. “Our aim was to reach people in our own way, not by compromising or selling out.”   Previously, they signed on to record labels such as a German label, Off Beat, and subsequently to Dependent Records. The irony in that Label’s name is obvious.  Dependency was something that VNV Nation wished to avoid.

In 2002, VNV Nation reached a climactic point in their career when the contract with Dependent ended.  In 2003, they formed their own label called Anarchron Sounds where they gained creative control of their music and accomplished their goal of becoming independent.   They could now determine for themselves how the music would sound, what the lyrics said and what would be shown on album covers.   They could become trend-setters instead of followers as their producers and the record companies wanted them to be.

The conflict between the old regime and the new is pointed out dramatically once again, by the use of language by VNV Nation. Their old record label explained the breakup by saying that they elected “to place the professional and personal integrity of the label and management first.”  VNV Nation entitled one of the songs with their new label, Honour.  Ronan wrote in the lyrics:

“The way was clear to rebuild this land
Shall I call on you to guide me well?
To see our hopes and dreams fulfilled?”

VNV Nation have been influenced by many bands such as Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Human League as well as classical music and Irish folk songs which are part of Ronan's heritage. The earlier sounds of synth pop and electronic incorporated synthesizers and technology to enhance a new quality of vocals and replace the traditional instruments that were once used.  The sound of electronic music had “opened the minds to the possibility that supposedly dehumanizing machine might actually make us more human.”  Initially, VNV was categorized as part of the popular genre EBM – Electronic Body Music. But that did not satisfy them.  As the new sound evolved, Ronan wanted “to call this music something else than EBM.”   He wanted to create for VNV Nation a futuristic sound. With this idea in mind, he coined the term “Futurepop” which brought a new following and genre to the music scene.

Lyrics need to move people in emotional ways.  “Musical instruments are merely tools used to produce sounds. It is up to the artist to do something musical with these instruments.”  The interpretation and powerful messages in VNV Nation’s lyrics signify spiritual personal growth and social empowerment for those who are tired of being dominated by mainstream society.

There is great debate about what the lyrics of VNV Nation represent.  Some people believe that the common thread in their music is issues about war, politics and social justice. That would be too simplistic and superficial a view. “Hardship is always going to be the best stimulus for great music.” Ronan goes beyond the surface with symbolism and spirituality, which are woven through each song.  A common theme is to find one’s way without losing one’s own sense of self. This can be accomplished through internal change or rejecting the forces in society that seems to have a hold on one’s happiness.

The lyrics in their song “Fearless” are a prime example:
“I am not alone. I am not afraid. I am not unhappy
Such a stupid ritual to have to say to myself everyday
I'm not alone but I found my answer and set myself free.”

This language conveys the thought of being forced to adopt an ideology that one does not believe in but is forced to accept on consent.  Finally, the individual breaks free.  This can be viewed as an analogy for VNV Nation's struggle with their record label and being unable to express themselves in the manner they wished. They found their answer by forming their own label.

In another song,  “Nemesis” from the album Judgement, released in 2007, the lyrics represent the way the world is seen through someone's eyes, and the idealism of the way that individual would like it to be.

“I want justice for a voice that can't be heard
Vindication for every suffering and hurt.”

VNV Nation has a strong message for people to speak up and follow their hearts instead of being afraid of making changes that and conforming to what is expected of them as members of society. Finally, in order to promote their music to fans commercially yet to maintain their independence and avoid being part of the multi-national music corporation distribution networks, VNV Nation also uses a different approach to get their name out and their music heard. VNV Nation promotes their music using Internet technology.

Reaching their fans in this innovative digital manner, called the information age, is a  low-cost and cost-effective way to do so.  Like other artists and bands, their fan-base and even new comers, can be provided with up-to-date information on upcoming concerts, new releases and media events instantaneously through the promotional tools of mass emails, newsletters, and their official website which is maintained on a regular basis.   VNV Nation has taken it a step further.  They use social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace. The posting of their videos on YouTube by their fans is the essence of viral marketing.  It is taking word-of-mouth marketing to a higher level.  In effect, fans become their Marketing and Public Relations departments to assist in the distribution of their music.  People who otherwise might never hear a band like VNV Nation on a Top 40 radio station since many of the songs would exceed the limit for air time play can now be exposed to their music 7 days a week and 24 hours a day.

In conclusion, there is a powerful aura that surrounds VNV Nation that has allowed them to become successful without a big prestigious label attached to their name.  They have been able to create a new music genre that has gained a respect for them in the electronic industry.  The ability to create beautiful digitally enhanced songs with meaningful lyrics that provoke people to seek change and embrace their individuality requires a hegemonic force like VNV Nation. Lastly, they have demonstrated the ability to display a unity with their fans,  “We are at the end of the day human and that is what we're here to remind people.”

Update 2018:

Talking about life, Ronan's words of wisdom:

Million Dollar Quartet at Caesars Windsor

Friday night, I took Bill's mom to see Million Dollar Quartet! We had a fun night out together, so thank you Caesars Windsor!

My thoughts on the show: Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash were top notch in my view. Carl Perkins was decent. Elvis though....while he had the moves, his voice was odd. Really high-pitched and not very "Elvisy" if you know what I mean. I realize this was back in the starting days of his career, but I didn't feel it at all. All I could keep thinking was "damn, my friend Norm Ackland Jr. (he is an ETA - Elvis Tribute Artist) should have been in this role!" Elvis' girlfriend Dyanne was quite the head-turner with her seductive charm and her sultry vocals during Fever was a nice touch, but I didn't particularly like her voice overall. Lastly, Sam Phillips (the man who initially discovered and launched the early careers of the guys, as well as the founder of Sun Records), he was alright. Definitely had that sleazy record producer vibe down. ;)

Anyhow, still entertaining performance to hear a lot of classic songs to bop along to like Walk The Line, Great Balls of Fire, That's Alright, Brown-Eyed Handsome Man, See You Later Alligator and more!

You can check out all the photos on the Caesars Windsor Facebook page, as there was absolutely no photography/videos allowed!
