Tribute to Houdini at Windsor Comedy Club

We had an amazing turnout for our first Proshow event with Windsor Comedy Club, a hot spot here in downtown Windsor, where you'll often find comedians from all walks of life, hitting the stage each and every week to perform with or without a brewski in hand.

Getting the creative juices flowing, why not offer something a little different this time to adult patrons and see what a little magic can do.

What's that saying, team work makes the dream work? It sure does.

And so we introduced Out of the Box - A Tribute to Houdini and brought our friends, Silk Echos, along for the ride to open up the show and share their beautiful voices with the crowd. Nothing better than collaborating with local performers.

A Sure Bet: Guys & Dolls Musical Review at the Capitol Theatre

No luck has been needed as Arts Collective Theatre’s (ACT) production of Guys and Dolls showing at the iconic Capitol Theatre in Windsor, Ontario, truly dazzled theatre patrons once again.

With the creative vision of Artistic Director, Chris Rabideau and Assistant Director, Cristina Orlando,  Musical Direction by local and internationally renowned composer Ian Smith, and dance choreography by Tiffany Chan, made for an incredible afternoon of sights and sounds.

Set in Depression-era Time Square, Guys and Dolls is filled with many colourful characters and tells the stories of sinners, like big shot Nathan Detroit (played by Michael Rice), who runs a notorious floating crap game and is looking for his next spot to earn some quick money. Getting not so subtle hints from his sweetheart of 14 years, Miss Adelaide (Avonlea Smith), a headliner at the sizzling Hot Box Club, he needs to curb his gambling ways to take the plunge and marry her already.

We also have the suave doll-magnet, Sky Masterson (Gianluca Ieraci) who unexpectedly falls head over heels in love with mission worker, Sarah Brown (Jamie Brown-Hart). Their love is put to the test when Sarah believes he has set up an illegal game at the mission.

Highlights:

๐Ÿ‘‰First and foremost, my husband, Bill – Total bias here to include a review of his magical performance, but honestly, even if I didn’t know him, he really knocked my socks off. As a professional magician in his every day life, he had a few tricks up his sleeve to delight audiences.  He was part of the terrific ensemble cast, singing, dancing, and had a fun role of acting a little tipsy (intentionally!). I had no idea he could move and groove on stage like this.

๐Ÿ‘‰Gambler, Nicely Nicely Johnson - Kyle Cloutier was just a joy to watch on stage – quick-talking and such an exuberant personality. Being one of the sinners, he’d still probably whistle a cab for you on the hustling and bustling streets of New York.

๐Ÿ‘‰Big Julie -  Leave it to ACT to switch things up and take “Big Jule” from the original musical and give us a treat with “Big Julie” played so confidently by Florine Ndimubandi.  She was a powerhouse in the song “Sit Down, You're Rockin' The Boat.”

๐Ÿ‘‰Adelaide - Avonlea Smith dominated the stage in the song “Adelaide’s Lament”. It was performed so well, highlighting her incredible vocals and ability to engage in a role so vivaciously that obviously she was destined to play.

๐Ÿ‘‰Nathan Detroit - Adelaide’s beau in the show, Micheal Rice, sang straight from the heart and was rather convincing that he could change his ways, with his declaration of love to Adelaide, in the song, “Sue Me.”  His comedic timing was perfect in so many scenes.

๐Ÿ‘‰Sky and Sarah – Gianluca and Jamie Brown-Hart have such chemistry that steamed up the stage -holy moly. Apart, Jamie holds the gift of innocence on stage that never wavers from her character, which is remarkable to watch.  Gianluca’s thick tousled hair and New York-ish quirks of a sleazy sinner is spot on, and his vocals would truly make Frank Sinatra proud.

๐Ÿ‘‰Arvide Abernathy – Jim Walls is the ultimate endearing grand-father figure of Sarah. Honestly, can we just give him a big hug? Just a genuine performance all around.

๐Ÿ‘‰“Sit Down, You're Rockin' The Boat” wait for it, hallelujah! Heidi Richards, as General Cartwright really shone in this scene with her energetic gospel stylings. You have to experience this whole scene for yourself.

๐Ÿ‘‰The choreography from the dance scenes were amazing and kudos to Tiffany Chan as well as technical dance instructor Leslie McCurdy for being able to create routines that evoked a lot of energy and passion with every step.

๐Ÿ‘‰Costume Manager, Moya McAlister and designer Valentine Yaghobzadeh brought a new level of New York chic fashion with bright, bold and sparkly outfits that made a statement and to reminiscence the time period with hints of modern flair.

Having a slight inside scoop of the dedication that everyone gave to perform in Guys and Dolls, along with the many hours of laundry that had to be done after these passionate performers left the stage every night, I am so happy that I was able to see this musical, which is one of my all-time favourites, in such a refreshing new way.

As well, I applaud the diversity for casting individuals of all walks of life, and true community spirit that Arts Collective Theatre (ACT) brings to Windsor, Ontario.

As the curtains close next week for this production, excitement continues on for what they’ll have in store for 2024.

Always By Your Side: Ocean Heaven Movie Review

If you ever told me that I would be a puddle of tears simply watching a Jet Li trailer, I’d have to laugh at you because I’ve only really known him for being a martial arts actor. However, I’ll never view him the same way again.

Ocean Heaven is a powerful film from director, Xiao Lu Xue.  Jet Li stars as Wang Xincheng, an aquarium technician who is terminally ill, but through every mouthful of pills he has to swallow and pain searing throughout his fragile body, he continues to do everything humanly possible to make sure his autistic son, Dafu (played by Wen Zhang) will be able to survive in the world without him.

The opening boat scene in this movie is where you’re probably going to shed your first tear. A million emotions might be swirling through your head and there could be some hatred for Li's character, or maybe it's actually a little relatable, if you are/have been, in his shoes. It's quite a lot to process at first but sets the tone for an intense movie-viewing experience.

This movie has so many layers too. It is interesting to note how “face culture” is explored while still applauding the level of vulnerability that is woven throughout with the lead male character, which makes it even more incredible to watch and notice all the nuances.

The aquatic cinematography by Christopher Doyle is beautiful and as an audience, we can see how free Dafu is in the water – a sensory pleasure for him and for us to observe.  The film also excels at showing emotional frailty at different stage in life and the burdens we carry, or perceive them as such, only to sometimes be surprised when we truly open our eyes and see someone for who they are.

This is the reality for Wang’s character, as he desperately tries to teach Dafu how to live, only to realize his son is already living, just not in the way he had expected. We deeply empathize with his struggles, cheer for his small triumphs and ultimately gush over his unconditional love for Dafu till his final breath.

What else can we take from the movie? We’re not getting out of here alive. We will all die someday, some sooner than others. No one is ever truly alone though, even if it may feel like that during times of despair. A gentle hand is always out, a shoulder is there to cry on, you just have to reach for it.

Ocean Heaven displays a true testament of the power of human connection - in this situation, a father-son bond that is unbreakable and that no matter how different, we are all still very capable of having the same heart.

Final thoughts:

Everyone views autism through different lens and no two people are alike entirely.  To me, that is the beauty of being human. Those who are on the autism spectrum or prefer the term, neurodivergent, or even something else entirely (apart from the medical side for diagnosis, this remains an individual choice, as some also don’t feel a label is necessary to define their personal identity at all), see the world in very different ways.

While some may argue the idea of why a person with autism wasn’t cast for the role of Dafu, instead of an actor, I can simply appreciate this movie for the vision it had to tell its story, along with the intensive preparation done by Wen, and the creative and artistic merits of all the crew.

For many reasons, I was so deeply moved by this film from the very beginning to the final moments when the credits ended, as was my husband, Bill. We were discussing this movie a lot afterwards and our new-found love for sea turtles.

๐Ÿ’œHave you seen this movie, what did you think? Feel free to send me a note!
