Celebrating 75 Years of Magic at the Chimczuk Museum!
Wow it's been a moment since I have been able to sit down at the computer here - so hello again to my followers, I hope you've been doing well!
On Saturday, October 25, 2025, The Windsor Magic Circle Ring 116 celebrated 75 years of magic!
The Windsor Magic Circle is a local magic club. It is affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Magicians, as Ring 116. Members (16 yrs +) are from the Windsor-Essex County area of South Western Ontario in Canada. Talents range from beginner to full-time professional magical entertainers.
From now until March 2026, you can stop by many of the displays inside the Chimczuk Museum (401 Riverside Dr. East) that showcase past and current members. You can also view historical artifacts.

The Windsor Jr. Magic Circle (run by Elizabeth) had a great day as well. She made balloon animals, performed magic and handed out lots of fun goodies for everyone who stopped by. She even made wands for the kids!

On Sunday, May 18th at The Masonic Temple Ballroom, The Windsor Magic Circle and Temple Blooms presented - Hocus Pocus 2025.
This all ages event was one to remember. Guests experienced up close table-side magic and finished with a big stage show with magic and grand illusions.

Tribute to Houdini at Windsor Comedy Club
We had an amazing turnout for our first Proshow event with Windsor Comedy Club, a hot spot here in downtown Windsor, where you'll often find comedians from all walks of life, hitting the stage each and every week to perform with or without a brewski in hand.
Getting the creative juices flowing, why not offer something a little different this time to adult patrons and see what a little magic can do.
What's that saying, team work makes the dream work? It sure does.
And so we introduced Out of the Box - A Tribute to Houdini and brought our friends, Silk Echos, along for the ride to open up the show and share their beautiful voices with the crowd. Nothing better than collaborating with local performers.

CBC Marketplace: Weighing in on deception
However, when he is not performing for audiences, his passion is to help others avoid being duped in their every day lives. The most vulnerable population is often seniors, but we can all be fooled at any age. The sad reality is that sometimes we don’t even know it until it’s too late.
The anticipated CBC Marketplace episode with Asha Tomlison that has Bill helping to debunk a scam that even the Dragons' Den investors bought into, will air Friday, February 2, 2018, at 8 pm on CBC!

Not fooling us: Penn and Teller perform at Caesars Windsor
We went to see Penn & Teller at Caesars Windsor. Dating a performer, Friday/weekend outings are last minute because he is usually booked for gigs.
Anyhow, we caught a cool 80's band at Cosmo's before the show. My retro heart!! <3
Then it was off to see Penn & Teller. Getting mezzanine seats worked out because a. they were cheap and b. super comfy!
I'll be honest, we were both not very impressed with this show. They started out strong with a fun inflatable bit, but then it went downhill fast. The performances we saw before at Caesars were much better choreographed. This felt sloppy and rushed at times. Lots of audience participation, but that didn't change our minds.
Teller was amusing, and his skill is definitely awesome, but again, something was missing. There were too many card tricks in the performance and a few tricks seemed to lack a logical ending. Staying optimistic for a kick-ass finish, we were let down with such a weak finale called the "Love Ritual" card trick that involved every patron, but sadly didn't end up working for everyone.
Penn also felt more vibrant in the past. Sure he's touring and probably exhausted, but "fool us" into thinking you're the life of the party on stage. That's your job. I felt his energy was lack-luster, despite his excessive talking. lol Seeing his weight loss in person was even more shocking than viewing photos of him online. I realize he slimmed down for health reasons, but I gotta say I miss jovial "chunky" Penn.
Highlights though were their new password prediction, the nail gun (one lady a short distance from us was yelling out loud because I think she was so freaked out!), their version of the light/heavy trick, the human blindfold and Teller's artistic shadow routine.
Once the show was done, the line up for the meet & greet was huge! It was very strange that Penn split up from Teller because that meant people would have to wait in-line twice. I'm not sure who had that bright idea. Although Bill did want to get their latest book signed, and also show them his foot-twisting trick, it just wasn't in the cards this time!

Seeing the lineup after the performance, I thought that our chances of getting a picture would be minimal but I knew that Bill wanted to stay as long as possible because they are two top entertainers that have inspired his own career.
Surprisingly, the duo was more than happy to stay around for all of their fans; signing autographs, memorabilia and even someone's debit card! Thanks to a really nice couple who were waiting in line, Bill and I got photos with both Penn and Teller, Penn signed Bill's copy of "How to Play With Your Food" and he even autographed the program booklet that Jay (Bill's cousin) bought! :)

On June 2, 2012, my girlfriend and I saw Penn and Teller perform at Caesar’s Windsor. As a magician and skeptic, I was very interested in seeing one of my favourite duo’s perform live. I have some of their books, and DVDs, and have watched countless Youtube videos, especially being a performer in the entertainment industry.
I am definitely familiar with a lot of what they do. However, I wanted to actually see how they interacted with the audience and handled the unpredictable nature of volunteers that were randomly chosen from the audience. They did not disappoint!
Before the show started, there was some great soft jazz music playing with piano and bass. It set the mood that you were in for something cool and different. Unlike, as Penn can often be heard saying, other magic shows that use a lot of bad Motown music. This was a jiving and groovy show.
Penn and Teller made their entrance in a very simple way, nothing flashy at all. It was just the two of them coming on stage and saying their hellos (rather Penn saying hello as Teller talks very little in the show…plus his head was in a box).
So what happens next? They go right into their first trick. They get a volunteer with glasses, and bring her onstage. Expertly, her glasses disappear and reappear on Teller’s face once the box is ripped and broken apart off of his head. No they do not tell you how it was done.
Even though Penn and Teller have been known for some exposure of magic, they don’t show you how they do everything. They treat their audiences as intelligent and as equals, but at the same time they show that even though you may realize that the card is not really lost in the deck, they can still surprise you in a different way. They basically take your knowledge and assumptions and use that against you. I have to admit, there were two routines that I didn’t see coming as I was totally taken in by them. As a magician, using my knowledge against me is probably the best thing you can do. Penn and Teller won me over.
The duo display a unique sense of wit and humour in their acts. Penn is a master of witty verbiage, while Teller is a master of subtle body expression. The two really compliment each other and create some really dynamic fluctuations in the show with loud and quiet moments. When Teller breaks his silence and tells Penn to shut up, it only makes the moment even more gloriously hilarious as that is what a lot of people were thinking (the only other moment I can relate it to that was equally powerful and comical was in a Jay and Silent Bob movie where Silent Bob told Jay to shut up).
In a huge contrast, they ended the show on a quiet note. The whole theatre was darkened and only lit by a single candle. It was at this point that Penn and Teller truly made the audience feel as equals, as Penn stated that they could now see us exactly as how we were seeing them. It was truly a deep and beautiful moment. He explained quietly and with some added humour, but still with a humble seriousness, the peril of the bit he was about to do.
In the hands of some performers, fire eating might come off as a quick and mediocre stunt. Penn and Teller elevated it to something emotional and bigger than that moment on stage. Even though, a cross-wind on stage prevented the success of one of the transfers, it did little to diminish the point: Whether in success or failure, we are on the journey together. I, for one, am glad to take the journey with Penn and Teller.
After the show, Penn and Teller stayed out in the lobby to sign autographs, take pictures and meet their fans. Even though you could tell they were exhausted, they were still playful and genuinely appreciative of the support. They were playful and masters of the perfect photogenic poses (well they ought to be after so many years of this!) They signed everything from books, programs, to tickets and even the back of someone’s debit card!
While standing with your arms around Penn and Teller, you find that these “Bad Boys of Magic” are really a couple of down to earth, lovable guys. I guess that is their real magic. They make you smile.

Hugo Movie Review: If You Lose Your Purpose, It's Like You're Broken
Movie Review:
Martin Scorsese remains one of Hollywood's beloved producers and directors of our time and most would equate his work with the popular mafia film; Goodfellas. Step back though because Scorsese has truly made his mark in 2011 being part of his first 3D experience in movie making. Add in the creative elements of Johnny Depp and you have Hugo.
The movie Hugo is set in Paris during the 1930's, where a young orphan boy named Hugo Cabret (played by the adorably brilliant Asa Butterfield) lives in the walls of the Paris train station. After his father's death, Hugo's care is taken over by his alcoholic uncle, who trains him on how to turn the clocks each and every day. With the sudden disappearance of his uncle, Hugo further isolates himself and continues to rebuild the broken automaton that him and his father worked on together many years ago, hoping it will reveal a message from Hugo's father.
The station manager, Inspector Gustav, (played by the hilarious Sacha Baron Cohen) guards the station proudly and keeps an eye on all the young vagrants he finds stealing. His satisfaction revolves around sending them back to the orphanage where he believes they belong. While being somewhat of a tyrant though, Gustav's heart beats for a beautiful woman who works in a flower shop but his own limitations dealing with his physical disability interferes every time and he cannot find the courage to speak to her for more than a few moments.
A rude awakening happens when Hugo is caught stealing mechanical parts from a disgruntled toy shop owner named Papa Georges, (played remarkably by Ben Kingsley) who is anything but ordinary. Having Hugo empty his pockets and seeing the sketches in Hugo's notebook brings flashbacks and soon infuriates him. He threatens to burn each and every page if Hugo cannot prove that he is able to repair anything that is given to him.
Devastated, Hugo runs away in tears feeling like he failed his father, but later returns, in hopes that he will get his notebook back to finish the automaton. Soon greeted in the station by Isabelle, the Goddaughter of the toy shop owner (played by a rather enchanting young actress named Chole Grace Moretz) is more than willing to help Hugo get his notebook back and put back together his past. Together they embark on an adventure that tests the hands of time.
Hugo is one of the best films I've seen in a long time. Be forewarned though, this is not your typical fantasy movie at all!! If you plan on taking young children (under 10 years old) to this particular one, the subject matter might be a little overwhelming.
The movie reveals the darkest times and how fear can be the driving force in everything we do. At the same time, the genuine connections that develop between the characters are memorable, the innocence brings comfort and messages of hope leave you with a smile on your face.
A life may be taken away from us on the physical sense, but the spirit remains, as if the person is still sitting beside you today. As long as you believe, love never dies. Also the fragile nature of human beings can be at any age and the limitations we have are only the ones that we put on ourselves.
