When The Stakes Are High: Movie Reviews

Here are some more movie reviews coming your way!

Biopics have become one of my favourite genres of movies. Pinball – The Man Who Saved The Game, directed and written by Austin and Meredith Bragg, is a terrific story of Roger Sharpe, a GQ journalist and pinball fanatic, who in 1976 helped overturn New York City's 35-year ban on pinball, based on the ideas that it was considered a game of chance (a form of gambling) and challenged morality, especially among the youngsters.

The movie is really engaging and the story itself is compelling.  I really liked the cinematography too, with the 70’s vibe coming alive in each scene. There is a ton of humour throughout yet this does carry a serious tone too. Forewarning, you may just get fixated on Sharpe’s distracting, yet epic moustache.

The younger version of Sharpe (Mike Faist) and then the older version, played by Dennis Boutsikaris are both incredible actors.  There are heart-warming moments too, especially how a game like pinball can offer escapism and fuel a passion so deeply in one person, who is still figuring out his place in the world.

Proving that pinball is not a game of chance, but of skill is not any easy feat, but unlike the saying “you can’t fight City Hall”, Sharpe’s willing to take the risk.

Honor Society, directed by Oran Zegman, is a film that is full of unexpected surprises.

High school is almost over and determined to attend Harvard after graduation, Honor (Angourie Rice) spends much of her time, plotting strategies to axe out the other academic competition. Being an overachiever, Honor’s not afraid to stomp on anyone who gets in her way, unassumingly and with a smile. She’s quite an interesting character, narrating her devious plans that involve complex situations that challenge her own conscience and befriending Michael, played by Gaten Matarazzo (known for the tv smash hit Stranger Things) , who is more clever than we give him credit for.

This film definitely has a millennial edge, but it did remind me a bit of Clueless, wrapped in Mean Girls with a dash of Legally Blonde.  While the typical high school tropes (the nerd, the brainiac, the jock, the outcast etc..) are riddled throughout this movie and can be over the top at times, stay with it, as it takes turns that you might not see coming.

Michael B. Jordan is absolutely brilliant as not only the director but also starring as boxing champ, Adonis Creed in the highly anticipated Creed III

After hanging up his boxing gloves to start a new life, Adonis is shaken up when his friend and former boxing prodigy Damian (Jonathan Majors) shows up after serving a long sentence in prison and wants to be trained to enter the ring again.  When the gloves comes off, Adonis is haunted by memories he had tried desperately to bury.  As they continue to surface, we know it’s just a matter of time when Adonis is going to be pushed to the edge of his limit.

It’s predictable that Adonis is going to battle against Damian, but that doesn’t matter. What makes this movie so great is how character-driven it is. As they become rivals, the performances from Jordan and Majors are elevated with so many poignant scenes together and apart. The fight scenes are brutal but captured in such a thrilling way.

Several themes of brotherhood, sacrifice, and honour are key elements that weave together to make this such an impactful film.  While we see Damian as a villain (and a damn convincing one), he is also broken and hurt. We get to experience such vulnerability, especially with males who are in a sport like boxing, where they take every punch till they get carried out.

In the end, the clear message is that in life, you can’t run away from your demons, you gotta face them head on.

Lastly, we have Minions: The Rise of Gru.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the zany yellow blobs are back again with another movie.  This time, we’re going back to when villainous master mind, Gru (Steve Carell), was just a wee young boy, dreaming of what every 11 year old wanted at that age.  No, not a dirt bike, or a life-size dinosaur, but to be part of the most ruthless gang around; the Viscious 6. After they oust their leader -- the legendary fighter Wild Knuckles, Gru gets the once in a lifetime opportunity to audition for them and like we would expect, it goes terribly wrong. Chaos ensues as Gru outsmarts them and now is on the Viscious 6’s target list.

Humour was lackluster as well, which was surprising as the others gave me some good chuckles.  Many of the scenes felt like we had taken energy drinks and just waiting for that inevitable crash – complete with a headache.

The animation was great, but I felt the Minions were haphazardly thrown about to add in quick gags.  It really missed the mark on the feel good moments too and most of the other characters were forgettable, aside from a solid performance from Wild Knuckles (voiced by Alan Arkin).

Curiousity got the best of me, as I’ve seen all the other films (Despicable Me & 2 being favourites), but this one was definitely the most disappointing. I’ve had enough of the Minions, but considering this film was not geared towards my demographic in the first place, there’s probably another one around the corner.

Sports OHL: Windsor Spitfires VS Sudbury Wolves

It's been quite a while since we've seen a live hockey game and so a spontaneous outing at the WFCU seeing The Spitfires take on the Sudbury Wolves happened, thanks to our friends at 519 Magazine

Game has started!

Overall, it was quite a game! There was plenty of action on the ice.  I have to say that I prefer watching sports really of any kind in-person as opposed to on tv. I love to feel the energy of the crowd and witness all the moments as they happen, not in a replay.

The most surprising part was that last minute on the clock, as in any game, you never know sometimes what is going to happen. It might have had the boys going into overtime!  Fortunately, Windsor Spitfires came out with another win. The final score was 5-4 against the Sudbury Wolves!

Grab Your Passport: 2022 Movie Reviews

Happy almost Autumn! I'm back with another set of movies! ๐Ÿฟ๐ŸŽฅ This time I ended up going on a little travel excursion with films and so you'll enjoy some reviews from our neighbours across the border in The United States, all the way to Ireland and Australia!

Directed by Julius Avery and written by Bragi F. Schut, we’re not just entering a good vs evil superhero story in Samaritan, although it may seem like it at first. A young boy named Sam (played by Javon Walton) is convinced that his neighbour Joe, played by action-star Sylvester Stallone, is in fact Samaritan – a forgotten superhero that went missing 25 years ago.

The relationship between Sam and Joe is what really stood out the most. The interactions between them felt genuine, and I loved the curiousity of Sam’s character. I also like the restoring of humanity aspect that does wax and wane a bit but in the end, we know that one act of kindness can have a domino effect in life.

The movie is predictable in some ways, but surprising in others. I never read any of the comics so I am just basing my judgment solely on this film. We can’t forget the action of course, as there were some pretty amazing fight scenes, especially the warehouse battle and also the unexpected twist. The villain, Cyrus, was lame though, so that was a bit of disappointment as I think a stronger one would have really helped the movie along. He was like a watered-down version of Bane from the Dark Knight mixed with a little Keifer Sutherland appearance-wise.  He was rather forgettable.

Despite some of the flaws, the acts of heroism always hold up. The fact that Stallone has not aged as gracefully as others in the Hollywood spotlight and people might criticize that element, I didn’t really mind as his performance was heartfelt and highly entertaining overall.

I’m not really into sports, although I don’t mind seeing a live game every now, but I do love a good sports movie and this one just blew me away.  When Adam Sandler is not bleeding my ears with his annoying baby voice act (I got through 15 minutes of the film; Going Overboard and had to shut it off) his other abilities are so impressive.

Hustle is directed by Jeremiah Zagar and produced by basketball legend, LeBron James, Adam Sandler, and others.

Sandler plays a Philadelphia 76ers scout named Stanley Sugerman, who lives and breathes basketball. His job sends him travelling all the time, which clearly has an impact on his family life, but he is determined to find his next talent and prove he can rise up to be more than just a coach. While in Spain, Stanley comes across Bo Cruz, played by Juancho Hernangomez who is a phenomenal streetplayer (and is a pro Spanish b-ball player in real life too! ) who doesn’t back down from anyone or anything. Stanley believes he can mold him into the next superstar basketball player with some tough love and mentoring. Bo has what it takes but carries a lot of skeletons in his closet that will test the limits of how far he’ll go with or without Stanley by his side.

The movie is so impactful on many levels, as we see the struggles of Stanley on and off the court especially his desperation to be somebody. It’s heartbreaking but we’ve all been in his shoes in some way or another, so it’s relatable and his performance hits straight to the heart.  The friendship between him and Bo is so genuine with real tender moments and shows how trust is the foundation to build upon anything else.

Hustle is one of the best movies of 2022 for me and a total slam dunk!

Swinging Safari is an Australian comedic and dramatic romp of craziness with a 70’s vibe, starring Guy Pearce, Kylie MinogueJulian McMahon (biggest crush from the series Nip/Tuck) and more. It was written and directed by Stephan Elliott, who is well-known for The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The movie is funny, fast-paced, loud and bordering on obnoxious at times, showing the perspective of life through the lens of the adults and children in Australia during the 1970’s. Throw in a random beached whale that is really the most exciting thing to happen to the town of Wallaroo in a long time, maybe forever.

There are so many characters in this one, it is hard to keep track.  I loved the innocence and sweet relationship of Melly (it’s rare I can find a movie with a “Melissa” in it – so yaay!) played by Darcey Wilson and Jeff (Atticus Rob), as they had to both navigate dealing with their dysfunctional families.  I also appreciated Guy Pearce, who played Keith Hall, who was as eccentric as his fashion choices.

The narration helps to create some sort of cohesion of telling the stories of each of the families, including the sad stories of two pets specifically Doody the Dog and Tommy the Turtle, but a lot of scenes are disjointed and that’s probably intentional, to show what it was like to grow up in suburbia with cruel parental discipline and moral compasses tossed out onto the barbie.

Some scenes were so outrageous that I was thinking of giving up on the movie, but then it pulls you back in and you’re laughing awkwardly while tapping your feet to the great soundtrack with songs like Spirit in the Sky and Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep.

So grab a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken and have a swingin’ good time!

Directed by Tom Reeve, Hard Times (known prior with the title Holy Water), is a crazy, tushy-grabbing good time Irish comedy that pokes fun of all our insecurities, religion, sex, and it’s “fecking” bizarre.

Set in the village of Killcoulin's Leap, what could possibly go wrong when you have a group of men who are desperate to make quick money and try and hijack a Viagra truck? Well you get the FBI after you and of course, with fear of now being caught, the only logical thing to do is dump all the pills into your local "Holy" well.  Unfortunately, all goes haywire as everyone from the town takes a sip, and another sip, and another, of the water, which leads to many residents “rising up” to these miraculous feelings thrusted upon them.

The movie is funny but a little long-winded at times. It was actually filmed in Devon, England, and the scenery is gorgeous throughout so that's a plus.  One thing that seems to be apparent is that Irish movies never shy away from nudity so you’ll be seeing a lot of anatomy in this one!

Hockey Night In Windsor: Windsor Spitfires Vs Owen Sound Attack

Last night Bill and I went to see the Windsor Spitfires take on the Owen Sound Attack! Good game, but if i'm going to be totally honest, the Spits didn't play cohesively very well as a a team. So many missed pass opportunities. They played extremely aggressive as per usual and got a few good shots in, but when it came down to it, Owen Sound took the win 3-2. They were working together as a well oiled-machine on the rink, so I think that's where the Spits need to improve in future games.

This was my opinion anyhow. It was still a fun game to watch and I would like to thank Dan and April Savoie from 519 Windsor for the tickets!

Here are a few photos that I took at the game:

Goalie: Keep Your Stick On The Ice

Everyone has their own view of what an athlete is worth, but the coach ultimately determines who goes onto the ice and who sits on the bench.

The life of professional hockey goalie, Terry Sawchuk, shows the extreme highs and lows of being a sports superstar.  After a while, that shot of whisky doesn’t even come close to touching the pain and all the cheers once heard from the crowds become silent.

In this Canadian biography, Goalie; Mark O’Brien plays the legendary goalie for The Red Wings (while also being traded for other teams throughout his career), Terry Sawchuk. No matter what sport you play, there is always a level of uncertainty that this may be your last game. Terry never stopped playing even through over 400 stitches and countless injuries. As blood dripped down from his face in the locker room, he still laced up his skates and went out there to perform. Some may say his dedication was an unhealthy obsession brewing from a very dysfunctional childhood, while others see him as their hero out doing what he was paid to do, like any career.

Not having any protective gear, like a face mask for a goalie seemed absolutely absurd because of the aggressive nature of hockey, but it was the norm. Terry started wearing his mask in the early 60’s, and it was only in 1966 that full protective face masks were standard equipment hockey.

The film is deeply saddening, but shows the impact that Terry left on many people who knew him from team-mates to family. There is one moment on the subject of friendship that is literally heart-breaking.  The acting was great though, as Mark O’Brien delivers a wonderful performance as well as Kevin Pollak, who played his ill-tempered coach, Jack Adams.

All the accolades, like four Stanley Cup wins and 103 shut-out victories are impressive, but this tragic story is one that begs the question, does the goalie always have to go first?
