17th Anniversary Dinner at Tabouli by Eddy's

Dinner at Tabouli by Eddy's
BBQ platter: hot rolls, fattoush salad & hummus, kaftas
beef shish kabobs, chicken shish tawooks
Dessert: baklava and cheesecake

Lebanese cuisine is quite popular here in Windsor-Essex County and it's one of our favourite cuisines to enjoy when dining out or even grabbing take-out. After a busy day, we headed off  for our 17th anniversary at Tabouli by Eddy's

The atmosphere was really inviting the moment we stepped into the restaurant. The colours and decor pieces really match the relaxed yet elegant vibe. I would suggest bringing an extra sweater if you are eating indoors as it was a little chilly inside or opt for enjoying some patio dining.

One aspect that was really apparent was how well-trained the staff were from anticipating specific customer needs to keeping our waters refilled before we even needed to call anyone over for a top up.

Our waiter was friendly and the timing of the appetizers to our entrees flowed so well. Sometimes you just get everything laid out on the table and feel overwhelmed, not here. It is all the little touches that really make a difference in service and they truly excel in this area.

The menu was varied so whether you're a hungry meat lover, a vegetarian or somewhere in-between, there were tons of entrees to choose from or you could get a platter that would yield lots of leftovers.

The food was delicious and presented elegantly. There was more than enough for us which meant leftovers for the next day and no extra cooking for me. They do not shy away from offering generous portion sizes.

We had the bbq platter with sautéed vegetables. The pita chips definitely had a kick of spice but I enjoyed dipping them in the hummus. The meat was really tender and flavourful. They also had the best fattoush salad.

To our surprise, baklava and their decadent cheese cake were compliments of Eddy, the owner. A sweet end to our meal.

We'll definitely be back.

Let's Taco 'Bout It: The Grand Cantina

After a very busy day, I had the sudden craving for tacos...We all know that when a craving hits, it must be satisfied!

Passing by many times, but never stopping in, it was finally the night we would go to The Grand Cantina;  a wonderful Mexican-inspired restaurant in the heart of Walkerville, here in Windsor, Ontario Canada.

Opening the door, you are hit with vibrant colours from all angles and there is a real warmth to the space.  There is a lot of beautiful Mexican folk art decor too.

Although we didn't make a reservation, we lucked out as they always save a few tables for walk-ins. Our server was very friendly and the menu had a lot of variety, along with the drink selection, if you partake in boozy beverages.

There were so many taco options to choose from. I had a little anxiety about ordering anything that might be too spicy as that is always an issue with certain cuisine and I wouldn't be able to enjoy.

We decided to go for the Taco Tuesday - Mix and Match your pack, which was the following:

Carnitas - shredded smoked pork, pico de gallo, lettuce and salsa verde.

Los Pollos Hermanos - citrus brined grilled chicken, pico de gallo and avocado.

Veganville - tempura fried smoked tofu, pico de gallo, pickled red onion, vegan aioli and corn chip dust.

Bill had never had a churro before, that was our chosen dessert.

The tacos were so delicious and flavourful. The tortillas were filled generously. Everything tasted so fresh and our bellies were happy. Churros were soft and tender on the inside with a nice crispy crunch on the outside, dipped generously in the house sweet salted caramel sauce.

I think we've found our new favourite spot for tacos! Oh and if they are full and you didn't make a reservation, no worries, they also got you covered with pick-up or delivery options.

Bon Voyage: Harbour House Date Night

We had a great date night at the Harbour House, located at 9550 Riverside Drive East, here in Windsor, Ontario.

Making a reservation online was simple and since it was quite a warm evening out, dining inside was our preference. Arriving, we were greeted and seated promptly. There was nice view of the outdoor patio and marina. Definitely a very relaxed atmosphere and we had some fun entertainment before our meal arrived from our friend Eric, who we came out to see. He provides magical table-side services to all patrons - you can find him there from 5-8 pm on Monday evenings!

Our waitress was very accommodating and friendly throughout our meal. She told us right off the bat that she was a newbie. If you've ever worked in any capacity of customer service, including the food industry, it can have its challenges, but there was nothing negative to report, as she was lovely.

Current menu:

Bill had HH's well-known "Smash Burger" with fries and gravy. The burger was delicious and he especially loved the bacon jam, which elevated the flavour. The only complaint, there was a very small amount of fries in the basket, and so needed to order an extra side.

I ordered the Cobb Salad with buttermilk ranch dressing on the side, which was fantastic. Romaine, grilled chicken, shredded cheese, pickled beets, crumbled bacon, tomatoes and a few slices of hard-boiled eggs.

By the time this blog goes up, Bill will have sailed off to the East Coast to perform, and so this was a lovely way to enjoy each other's company until his return.

Definitely recommend checking out Harbour House.

You Gotta Thai Here: Thai Palace Restaurant Review

Lovely ambience here
Meal featured: fresh tofu spring rolls and chicken Pad Thai

Originally a Torontonian, I always loved the diversity of not just the people but the variety of cuisines and cultures that intermingled within our community. Moving to a much smaller-populated city like Windsor, Ontario, and being a Windsorite for many decades, it didn’t take long to realize that our local restaurant community here was filled with passionate creators who made mouth-watering dishes for their patrons and offered top-notch customer service.

The restaurant scene here has continued to blossom into a food-lovers paradise for all palates. Sadly as some doors closed, others ones have opened. If you’ve ever run a restaurant or know someone who has, you know the blood, sweat and tears that goes into it.

Today I wanted to mention Thai Palace, a special gem in our city that has been around since 2007 and offers authentic Thai cuisine. They have a wide range of menu items from delicious fresh spring rolls to start your meal off to flavourful noodle dishes and an assortment of curries – which can be spiced to order (spice level of 0 to 5), or they let you know it’s already spiced hot at a starting level 1!  It is a welcoming place for everyone, as there are vegetarian and vegan options available and gluten-free too.

Thai Palace excels at offering high food quality, generous portion sizes, a warm atmosphere, as well as daily specials to enjoy for a quick lunch or a leisurely dinner. You can also do take-out and just recently, they now offer delivery. As this may feel typical to your favourite restaurant, I wanted to share a special moment that I witnessed with my husband one evening that made us really pause and smile.

While waiting for our food, among many other patrons in the restaurant, we saw one of the staff sit down at a table and actually assist someone dining alone with their meal. This person had a visible disability. The staff member sat down in a chair and helped feed the customer without hesitation. It was a beautiful experience and honestly not something either of us had seen before during a busy evening rush. It made a lasting impression.

From that day, we’ve been back many times and shared great memories with others, over a little pad thai and bubble tea beverages.  So many of our celebrations (anniversaries, birthdays, etc) have been spent here over the years and you know, that little dash of humanity always makes a meal taste better.

Welcome to Windsor: Marhaba Bistro & Cafe

A lovely new place opened up right near us called Marhaba Bistro & Cafe (6152 Tecumseh Rd E), which is Windsor’s first majlis style bistro and cafe.

They have a good sized menu, so there is something for everyone to enjoy. We ordered the 3araby chicken shawarma with Fattoush salad. The food was delicious and flavourful. I really loved the pickled turnips on the side and how vibrant they looked. Also this was the first time having shawarma presented like this, instead of in a full wrap format.

It was a bit too hot to dine out on the patio, so we stayed inside which had a nice cozy atmosphere.  I think we have a new favourite place to enjoy.

Definitely try it out!

Choose Wisely: Erie St. Gastro Pub Food Review

One thing to love about Windsor is the food. We have so many places that have been in business for ages, and for good reason. As life changes, as it always does, it's exciting to see plenty of new local spots with creative and passionate chefs that are popping up that really seem to have the bones for lasting a long time - well, as long as they are supported.

Erie St. Gastro Pub has a great minimalistic look but is still bright and welcoming with elegant touches of decor. If you're in the mood for a hearty burger, a little asian fusion or even something off the vegetarian/vegan menu, this might be the place for you.

Dinner & Thoughts:

Steamed Dumplings (Appetizer)- A great start to the meal. We had veggie dumplings which were tasty with a sweet chili sauce. The freshly chopped green onions were a nice addition.

Pho -  I haven't had Pho (pronounced "fuh") in a while, so I was excited to try it out here. It had a heaping amount of chicken, noodles, and a very flavourful broth - I could taste the coriander with every slurp. The bowl was large enough that I have a bit of leftovers for lunch.

Double Pork  -  If you know Bill, he loves a good pulled pork sandwich. He really enjoyed his meal - the pork was soft enough but still with a little bit of chewiness. He also really loved the blend of mustard, chipotle mayo and honey ginger bbq sauce and the Vietnamese slaw. It was incredibly filling.

Usually a side salad is nothing special, but this one was elevated with the right amount of lettuce, shredded carrots, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, a little slice of avocado (he didn't eat that but a nice touch regardless). It was complemented by a delicious carrot/ginger dressing.

Warm hospitality - Maggie was top notch as our server, with a bubbly personality and just so accommodating to whatever we needed from the moment we sat down to the time we left.  We don't drink alcohol (if you do, they have a huge menu to choose from) but that was not an issue at all, as our glasses never remained empty for long, whenever passing by to check on us.

Overall, I am confident to say that this time, we have chosen wisely. :)

Windsor Restaurant Review - A Middle Eastern Delight: Windsor Palace

Not all Middle Eastern restaurants are the same. We have an abundance of them here in Windsor and they all have their own unique style, whether it’s a totally different take on traditional hummus, or even how certain dishes are prepared.  This time, we tried a new family-owned place called Windsor Palace, on 755 Wyandotte St East, here in Windsor, Ontario, which was highly recommended by our friend Matt, who dined with us.

The menu is fairly large and so you can get everything from chicken and lamb to falafel plates and shawarma sandwiches.

To start with, we had this delicious half and half soup, which was a combination of lentils and chicken.  Very mild taste with a nice thick texture and so tasty.

Our appetizer plate consisted of a mix of hummus, tabouli, fattoush and baba ghanouj. Also to note, their pita bread is incredibly soft.  The worst is hard, stale tasting pita that you have to gnaw into and eat. We pretty much polished off most of the appetizer.

Instead of ordering individual meals, Matt suggested that we just split the BBQ chicken with biryani rice and curry.  A great choice and wow was there a lot of food! The chicken was perfectly cooked and I just love biryani rice.

The service was excellent and the prices are reasonable for the quantity and quality, so I really cannot say there is improvement needed in any way from this experience.

Windsor Palace is ideal for just about any occasion. It has a casual elegance and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant was rather busy when we arrived, so go early or make reservations!

They also have another new location out in Tecumseh at 12 Amy Croft Drive, which I am certain will make the residents of Tecumseh very happy.

Oh and we are currently scoping out spots for the ideal place to host our wedding reception, so I think we are definitely keeping this one in mind!

Have you been here before? Did you like it, loathe it? Tell me about YOUR experience!

You're In Luck At Chuck's: Food Review of Chucks Roadhouse

It's great to see new restaurants are popping up all over the place here in Windsor-Essex County. We've had to say goodbye to several favourites over the years, but things change and people move on. It's all part of life.

On Saturday evening, Bill and I decided to check out Chucks Roadhouse (4001 Legacy Park, across from Silvercity!).  I thought there would be a lineup to get in, but even though it was rather busy inside and outside on their patio, we were able to be seated promptly by the hostess. There was no booth available though, but she did offer the option of the higher tables. However, we both just preferred a regular table to sit at.

Chuck's has a varied menu, everything from salads and wraps, to a carnivore's dream of so many different cuts of meat. I was leaning towards the New York steak, but my stomach whispered “ribs.”

Prices are ridiculous! Oh and by ridiculous, you have to do a double take because you cannot believe how much you are saving on a meal.  There is no lack of quality with the food nor will you complain that you didn't have enough. The portions are large enough to feel satisfied or even take-home a doggie bag for leftovers the next day.

What did we order?

Appetizer:
 Spinach and Goat Cheese Dip

Yum! Rich and creamy.  My only complaint is that we had to ask for more pita (1 was not enough – also $1 extra) and we didn't actually get another order of it until after our meal was half way done. So a little disappointed there because the dip ended up being luke-warm and stuck to the plate from sitting.

My meal: Texas Beef Ribs with a side caesar salad. Delicious sauce on the ribs and a huge quantity of tender beef ribs that literally fell off the bone when I cut into them.

Bill's meal:  Smoky Bacon Turkey Wrap with a side garden salad. Bill enjoyed his wrap a lot, plenty of turkey, smoked bacon and toppings, and it was very tasty with the oven-baked tortilla. He just felt it was overly-sauced. So for next time “light on the dressing.”

Dessert: A bit of a let down in all honesty that they only have one dessert; funnel fries. After a heavy meal, I cannot say that either of us really wanted something deep-fried. Someone else may, but not for us. The waitress told us that they used to have more variety, like apple crisp, which would have been perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  Alas, no dessert for us at Chuck's!

Overall, we had a delicious meal, the staff were extremely friendly, and it was a relaxed atmosphere. We would definitely return.

Stratford Trip

Bill had a gig up in Stratford yesterday and so I came along. He mentioned we would get to go to Fellini's Restaurant again, so how could I say no? :)

We had a delicious lunch! I love the atmosphere, as it reminds me of many New York-style restaurants that I visited many years ago. The service at Fellini's is always top-notch too. If you have never been here, I would highly recommend it. If you are going for dinner though, make reservations, as they get really busy!

Orange Almond Cake. A nice light dessert.

Afterwards, I just took a walk around and did a little window shopping, while Bill went off to perform.

Windsor Restaurant Review - Wineology: An experiment in something different

Date night is becoming increasingly popular, as our lives can get busy and hectic. Whether you have a job that keeps you on the road a lot (try dating a performer!), you have a handful of kids to take care of, or one of many other responsibilities, connecting with your partner is essential.

For us, heading out to eat for a few hours just feels good. It allows us to laugh, vent, and enjoy one of life's greatest pleasures; eating good food! It's like putting on clothes that came straight out of the dryer!

Our choice this time for date night was Wineology Bar & Restaurant, located at 1646 Wyandotte St. East here in Windsor, Ontario. A bonus was that I won a gift certificate for responding correctly to a trivia question on their Facebook, so it was a great incentive to use that towards a nice meal for us.

Walking in, the dark wood, dim lighting and exotic art pieces reminded in some ways of a mix between Spago's and Mazaar (when Mazaar first opened here in the city).  It was a very inviting atmosphere. One thing I didn't care for was the faux (maybe it was real, not sure!) fluffy cowhide-type benches that were torn up in spots. Wearing black pants, they were pretty much covered in hair by the time we left. Ugh! I will sit on a chair next time around.

Sitting down at Wineology

Obviously, going to a place called Wineology, wine is going to be at the forefront. There were pages upon pages of choices that included local and world wines.  Sweet, dry, red, white, blush, you name it, they'd probably have it. I'll supply you with their wine list here: Menu

Onto the food!

To start with, the menu was a bit sparse, which was disappointing, although it seems they change things up on a regular basis. Seafood was a big highlight in many of the appetizers/entrees, which would have worked great for me because the smoked salmon pizza looked so good, but Bill doesn't like seafood one iota. Noting the $16 + price on most of the pizza choices, we weren't going to be getting separate ones.

As an appetizer, we tried one of their salads. It had mixed greens, with cucumbers, pecans, dried fruit and topped with crumbled goat cheese.  Very nicely presented, a good starter to the meal and large enough to share!

Perusing the menu a few times over to find something that we'd both enjoy, we decided on the Chicken Pizza (Pesto Sauce, Mozzarella Cheese, Grilled Chicken, Zucchini & Onions). Mmmm...baked in a wood-fired oven too, I couldn't wait to get it onto our table. It was very light, thin and crispy, plus they offered white/whole wheat or a gluten-free crust. Hurray for choices! We always love a whole wheat crust. Only complaint, a little on the salty side.

Chicken Pizza time!

After digesting, it was time to figure out dessert. Initially, we were going to try the Reese Pizza because if there is one thing to know about my boyfriend, Bill, that chocolate and peanut butter combo makes him melt! However, Tiramisu won out this time, which happens to be my favourite dessert ever.  So what did I think of it? Rich and creamy, light and wonderful!  It was one of the best Tiramisu's I have had in a long time. It may look small, but it was perfect to share.

A beautiful presentation of Tiramisu

Service was OK. Our waiter was really soft-spoken, so at times it was difficult to hear him. However, he was polite and came back at the appropriate times to fill our glasses and ask how the meal was going.

I will say honestly that Wineology is not cheap, as they use high quality ingredients (often which are local) in many of their dishes. You can easily spend close to $100, especially if you're going to be extra thirsty. You may scoff at that amount, but keep in mind, not everyone finds that doable for their financial situation. So I would budget appropriately for the night out.  It's a nice treat for a romantic night out, if you want to gather a group of friends, or even book for a business meeting (can anyone say expense account?) but not a place we'd actually go to on a regular basis, unless they had some really awesome specials going on.

The restaurant is known to get pretty packed, so we ended up going early for dinner and as we were leaving, more groups were piling in.  Also on certain nights, it seems they have local musicians playing. Perhaps we'll come by another time for some jazz and tapas!

You can visit the Wineology website and be sure to "like" them on Facebook

Windsor Restaurant Review: Found the Foundry & Discovered Hot Dog Heaven!

A bit of reminiscing here. Downtown Windsor has certainly changed, has it not? It used to be bustling with people all day and night, not just on the weekends.

We had the amazing Palace Cinema, if anyone remembers that gem. I used to love going there every week, especially to check out all the foreign/independent films. I loved riding up the escalator to the chosen theatre entrance, buying over-priced popcorn (when popcorn tasted like real buttery popcorn, not whatever disgusting stuff is currently available at theatres with the faux butter!) or sneaking in some gummies from the convenience store near-by, and being greeted by an usher, who would take my ticket.

Food and drink-wise, there were tons of a little coffee shops too, like the Beans Cafe. You could stop in for a cocktail at the Avalon Front, and if you were hungry and wanted a fancier place to eat, you'd head over to Ye Old Steak House. I will always remember that restaurant because I had the best filet mignon steak.

Later on, nightlife came alive and so you had a variety of clubs to bar-hop to, from Jokers and Bentley's to a bit more upscale places like Dean Martini's. Ah the memories!  I remember having my very first alcoholic drink on my 19th birthday at Bentley's. My brother bought me a "Sex on the Beach" with added maraschino cherries. Yup, you could say I was a late bloomer. If you were kind of into the non main-stream scene, you'd head over to places like The Loop or frolic with the gothlings at Zebra Room.

The one place that I think almost everyone misses is Fast Eddy's Arcade. It was a great haven to escape into the world of classic arcade games and have a round of air hockey.

If anyone recalls, labelling us as “Sin City” in my opinion, was not something positive. After a while, many of the bars and nightclubs that were virtually all the same, really took a beating, as they switched from one name to another, and eventually shut down. Sure the American crowd flooded over here because of the 19+ drinking age, whereas over there, it is 21, but we cannot rely on just alcohol to be our only downtown attraction.

To be honest, after so many of my favourite places closed its doors over the years, I rarely had any interest in spending my time in the downtown core.

Slowly, that has changed, as a majority of the “booty” bars are now just a distant memory, and the atmosphere is starting to feel a little more inviting.  Sure there are still numerous vacant spots, but we can be hopeful more business owners will see the value of investing here.

From a bit of exploring downtown Windsor just this last week, it seems an abundance of pub-style restaurants have opened up and this is one of the new trends.

The Foundry Pub known as “Windsor's premier craft cocktail and deluxe deli destination” which is located at 459 Ouellette Avenue, ended up being our chosen place to sit down for some conversation and grub. The drink menu seemed endless, but I honestly couldn't tell you much about it because it's not something that I gravitate towards at all when we're dining out. Food, service and atmosphere rank the highest.

A welcoming atmosphere. Photo by Melissa Arditti

Sitting down, my eyes immediately saw on the menu "gourmet hot dogs."  It was a done deal, as the description of the Pizza Dog (smoked pepperoni, marinara, mozzarella, red onions, and parmesan cheese)  seriously had my mouth watering.  Sorry, no photo!

I was also with my boyfriend, and he decided to go with the Porky Dog (pulled pork smothered in Guinness BBQ sauce, chipotle aioli, sweet relish and red onions.) With each entree came either kettle chips and a yummy french onion style dip or a mix of veggies with ranch dressing.

Porky Dog with a side of carrots/celery   Photo by Melissa Arditti

The softness of the hot dogs were incredible and I guess they steam them to perfection. I have steamed hot dogs before at home and they never came out like this. I guess that's why i'm not a chef and they are. ;) This is a meal you just devour. I'm the messiest eater when it comes to food like this, so I tried to use a knife and fork and then just said f-it, i'm going in! Everything was delicious and we were quite full by the last bite.

Customer service was great, as well as the whole look and feel of the pub.  Our meals took a little while, especially on our second visit when they were really busy, but worth the wait because everything is made fresh. Our waitress was really friendly and bubbly. She even made Bill a special blend of fruit juices.

So, an update. We were back a second time and Bill had his usual Porky Dog, but I tried the Guinness BBQ Chicken (open faced hoagie, smothered in their signature BBQ sauce, mozzarella cheese, garlic aioli and red onions. . The chicken was tender and all the flavours were so good together.  I asked for “light” on the sauce though because for me, I don't like my food smothered in any kind of sauce.

My meal; Guinness BBQ Chicken. Oh yum! Photo by Melissa Arditti

My only suggestion would be to offer a whole wheat option on any of the buns, as I would prefer that over white.

Also, maybe a few more dessert options that are on the lighter side, or even some fresh fruit. We couldn't fit in one of their decadent desserts after the meal.

There is no doubt that we'll be back!

Update: Sad news, as of 2020, they are permanently closed.

Windsor Restaurant Review - Blooming inside and out: A look into the Sunflower Organic Cafe

Remember the days when you couldn't even order anything “on the side” because it just came prepared however the restaurant made it. Substituting was met with a sigh or “I'll have to ask if we can do that” reply. Choices were really limited and if you had any sort of allergy or special request, you'd have to phone up days in advance to figure out if they could arrange an alternative. I actually went through a time period when I just stopped eating out at restaurants because it was always a frustrating experience and slightly awkward, especially if I was the only one in the group with restrictions.

Now, a new way of thinking has sprouted for certain businesses, especially one that I recently had lunch at last week called Sunflower Organic Cafe, here in Windsor, Ontario.

I loved the vibrancy of the space with all the knick-knacks, neatly organized above the green trim. It kind of reminded me of entering into grandma's house, with a eco-hipster twist.

I was very impressed with how much this cafe caters to each individual and whatever circumstance you're dealing with. Celiac? No problem. Lactose intolerant? Many alternatives available.  Have another kind of auto-immune issue or follow a certain lifestyle, like vegetarian or vegan? Just let the waitress know and she'll figure out a way to make your meal completely customized to your liking. Oh and if you're into the whole organic movement, then you'll feel right at home.  Personally, I don't subscribe to one philosophy when it comes to food, I hold many beliefs that may align with yours, or perhaps be totally contradictory, so take my review with a grain of salt, if you wish and try it out for yourself.

Customer service was top notch. There's no two ways around that.  Our waitress was really friendly and offered to answer any questions that we had about the menu. Speaking of... the menu is large, so there is a lot of variety to choose from.  Start the day with an energizing breakfast, grab a salad, or just power up with one of their smoothies.

Another plus is how reasonably-priced everything is. Many items are under $10, like the Black Bean Wrap, Grilled Cheese, Baby Bella Mushroom and Cheese Omelette, and more.  Check out the menu here: http://www.sunflowerwindsor.com/cafe-menu/

I have to say that my Vegan Apple Cinnamon Buckwheat Pancakes rocked for only $8.95! I couldn't taste the cinnamon all that much, but the mixed berry compote, side of pure maple syrup, plus some refreshing apple splices hit the spot. 3 pancakes might seem stingy since we live in a society where quantity is valued far more than quality, but it was the right amount. I will say though that if you are not familiar with buckwheat, it is rather dense and a little bit on the heavy side, so it won't taste like your traditional pancake.

Vegan Apple Cinnamon Buckwheat Pancakes

On a personal note, I am also happy that there is a new place that I can take my parents. With all the major changes going on for my dad, eating healthy is a top priority. Having a nice customized meal that will give him lots of energy is important because he is so active. Oh and of course, this gives my mom a much-needed break, so she doesn't have to cook.

Thanks to my friend Gail for suggesting this spot for our lunch date! :)

Make sure to check out Sunflower Organic Cafe on Facebook!

Update as of Jan 2016: Sadly, it looks like they have closed their doors for good!!

Windsor Restaurant Review: Honey Badger Bistro Gives a Sh!T

Okay so let's first get this out of the way because I know by reading the title, you are immediately thinking, is she going to be talking about the hilarious viral video featuring nature documentary footage of...you guessed it, the honey badger? The answer is no.  What I will write about is The Honey Badger Bistro that I recently dined at for lunch with a friend, located at 5957 Wyandotte St. E, in Windsor, Ontario.

First impression walking in: cozy and cutesy, especially reading the wall art starting off with “you are the ham to my sandwich, burger to my fries...”

As an appetizer, we commenced with the white wine garlic mushrooms, served with pita bread. It was absolutely delicious.

The button mushrooms were nice and firm, and there was a rich taste with the garlic butter reduction. One thing to note though; there needs to be a serving spoon for the mushrooms.

We both had similar entrees. The portions were large, which is always a plus. Jen had the grilled vegetable wrap, and added chicken, while I had the grilled chicken wrap with bacon, mixed cheeses, lettuce, and tomatoes. I asked for the roasted garlic mayo on the side.

The chicken was juicy and, although we both would have liked a whole wheat tortilla, as opposed to the white flour one, grilling them made a big difference.

The French fries that accompanied our meals were extremely crispy, which I overheard the waitress tell another patron that they actually blanched the fries to get it to that level of crispiness.

The only complaint; nix the salt.

For dessert, we were tempted by the triple layered chocolate cake, however the waitress informed us that they had just run out. So, the option was to go with the carrot cream cheese cake. It was huge, so we split it.

The cake had fantastic flavour and, surprisingly, not overly sweet. It was a great way to end the meal.

The service was pretty good. I think our waitress felt a bit overwhelmed at times, as more patrons flowed in suddenly, but she was incredibly kind and really made our first visit enjoyable.

Overall, a great little place to dine for lunch or dinner.

Honey Badger has a plentiful menu and, if you like mac and cheese, they have numerous varieties that may pique your interest.

The prices may be a bit high from what you would expect, but realize that you’ll probably be bringing a good portion home for a second meal. Oh, and don’t worry about leaving the kids at home, they have a kids menu, too.

Unfortunately, they don’t have a website, but hopefully that will soon change.

UPDATE: Wow, looks like they have closed permanently, as of December 20th, 2014. This was quite a shock going to their page!

The Bistro At The Biltmore Estate

The Bistro in Antler Hill Village - All photos by: Melissa Arditti

After a full day of touring the Castle and sight-seeing just a portion of the 2.5 miles of pathways in the exotic landscape of Biltmore Gardens, we were extremely hungry.

Our first night, we decided to try out The Bistro, rated a top restaurant choice for guests and had a strong holding on the century-old “field to table” philosophy.

The Bistro was located in Antler Hill Village, about 20-30 minutes away. Keep in mind, everywhere that you went on the Estate, you took a delightful little shuttle bus, which had a friendly guide to tell you insightful tidbits of information as you rode along. Navigating through the Estate itself would be quite a journey, so this was a wonderful service that is always offered (rain or shine) to all Biltmore guests.

A little background on what you can expect here. I love the vibrant coloured chalk used. I think it really makes a statement.

Wine anyone? Plenty to choose from!
I also really like restaurants that have an open area, so I could see some of the prep and cooking being done.

Starter: My dad was in the mood for gazpacho soup. I’ve never been a fan, but this one was delicious and I ended up stealing several spoonfuls!

Entrees (My dad and I had the same)
Wood-fired Joyce Farm chicken with roasted green and white asparagus, griddled chevre, grit cake and thyme jus.

My mom had Sunburst Farms trout with toasted couscous, watercress, pistachio relish.

Desserts (we splurged as everything looked SO good!)
White peach melba with raspberry granite, white peach sorbet with amaretta crumble

ChocoLattebar – macadamia dark chocolate brownie with espresso ice cream

Needless to say, our meals were perfection and worth every dime. As we were leaving, big crowds were shuffling in, and so this is truly a place you want to make sure to visit when you come here for your first night.

Check out the menu and learn more about The Bistro online.

After dinner, we took a walk through Antler Village and threw a couple of coins into this beautiful fountain. All proceeds go to the Asheville Humane Society.

Heading back on the shuttle bus, we were reminiscing about how fabulous our first day ended up being and was interrupted by the sight of this unexpected rainbow.

A Taste Of Italy In Akron

Vaccaro's Trattoria

Anyone up for some Italian food? It was a Saturday evening when we returned back from all the fun activities of the day and let me tell you, I was starving! So we looked at the plethora of restaurants that the hotel provided. They had everything from casual family dining to more upscale fine dining. We decided to browse through the listing that had moderate prices, after all, this was only our first stop on a week’s worth of touring the United States, and a majority of the time, we’re a bit of a frugal bunch.

I didn’t realize how busy restaurants are in Akron! The parking lot of Vaccaro’s Trattoria was packed. My dad dropped me off at the door to see if I could get us a table or not. A bit frazzled by the influx of people, the hostess told me it would be a few minutes, but she’ll see if something was available. We didn’t make a reservation in advance, so it was the luck of the draw at this point. After a bit of waiting and being bounced around to one area of the dining room and then to another, we were finally seated.

Service was decent. We were told the special features, which seemed as long as the actual menu. It may not seem like a big deal, but from past experiences going out to eat, it bothers me to no end when I overhear another table being told of the specials and myself and whomever I am with get overlooked. So this small gesture made me happy.

Our waiter was very well-mannered and explained menu items that honestly we had never heard of before. It was interesting to see the chefs come out from time to time and chat with other patrons. Obviously, there is a clear indication on who are regulars at this restaurant when they know you by name.

Although I will say that if you are searching for a quick dining experience, this is not the place to go to. We were getting a bit antsy after time was ticking away, but the quality of our meals ended up being worth the wait.

Here is my dad’s “Italian Wedding” soup. I’ve had this kind of soup many times before, but tasting a few spoonfuls, I cannot say that anything even compares. It had so much flavour and was very light. A perfect appetizer.

His meal was veal parmigiana, which had breaded veal scaloppini, egg angel hair pasta, aglio e olio mozzarella di bufala. (translated to: spaghetti with oil and garlic, and mozzarella made from the milk of domestic water buffalo). A dense carb-filled meal, but the veal was cooked well and he really enjoyed every bite.

My mom had her first taste of “Free-range airline chicken.” What is airline chicken? Well, it’s actually quite simple; a boneless chicken breast with the drumette part attached. It was served with corn bread, guanciale (an Italian cured meat), blistered grapes, mushroom ragout and swiss chard. The presentation was beautiful and the chicken was delicious.

I had a craving for seafood and so immediately I knew what I was getting; Jumbo Scampi and Agnolotti Pasta. It consisted of jumbo scampi, and I do mean jumbo, lobster agnolotti, chardonnay garlic butter, and julienne summer vegetables. If there is a dish that I would recommend here, this is the one. If you’re a seafood lover, once you bite into the pasta filled lobster, you’ll be hooked. I am actually getting hungry just thinking about it.

Finally, dessert. I cannot go into an Italian restaurant and not have tiramisu. Anything else makes no emotional sense to me, as this is my all-time favourite sweet. I’ve had tons of tiramisu over the years. Some have been orgasmic and others have disappointed. This particular tiramisu was quite tasty but the amount of mascarpone was a bit on the heavy side. However, the presentation was quite lovely to look at. We split this in three.

To finish off our meal, we ordered tea. I loved the gorgeous tea boxes that were presented in wooden cigar boxes. They had a variety of flavours, both organic and non-organic. This was a nice elegant touch.

Interestingly, there are also a few spots outside the restaurant that you can dine at. Definitely more intimate. I caught a little romantic evening taking place on our way out, as you’ll see in the first photo of the review.
Day one of our trip was certainly memorable and we commented that if food is this good in Akron, what is in store for us when we check out some other restaurants across the United States? Well, you’ll have to continue checking out Windsor Square, as I share more food reviews.
