Product Review: Does Schmidt's Deodorant Really Stink?

Well, I think many of us can agree that for a multitude of reasons, 2020 stinks, but that doesn’t mean we have to smell foul too, right?

Deodorants are very hit and miss, they can work for a while and then suddenly stop. This can be for many reasons such as the brand trying new formulations and of course the natural changes that our bodies have over time. Hi hormones, yup I am talking to you!

The whole natural movement needs to be looked at with a critical eye though, as it has its own pros and cons. Plus, they can be pretty expensive and not live up to its claims.

Thanks to ChickAdvisor, I was able to try out a sample of Schmidt's Deodorant in the scent Rose and Vanilla.

#chickadvisor

WOWZERS... this scent is strong! Opening up the lid, you are hit with the smell of roses right off the bat. I honestly couldn’t smell any vanilla but after a few more times of sniffing, it was there, or shall I say barely there.

The application stick was easy to use, just twist once or twice for the product to come to the top, and then swipe each underarm area.

#trySchmidtsNaturals

After approximately 8 hours of wear-time today, doing house chores, cooking, and getting in my daily exercise, I’m STILL smelling like roses.

PROS

✔Glides on easily

✔Texture is good. No stickiness or residue left on the skin or my clothing

✔Somewhat effective at curbing sweat, a little goes a long way (I didn’t need to re-apply at all)

✔Cruelty-free

✔Sensitive skin friendly (this may depend on each person as certain scents can evoke an allergic reaction whether synthetic or natural – so still be cautious of a reaction - I usually prefer everything I put on my body to be totally fragrance-free)

✔Reasonably priced, in comparison to many other natural deodorants on the market

Other aspects that may appeal to you:  Cruelty-Free (Leaping Bunny Certified) and Certified Vegan

πŸ’

CONS

❌This particular scent is too strong (although others may like it) for me. If they could reformulate, I would like something much more milder, maybe less rose, more vanilla.  I feel like if I was out in public at an appointment where they have a “scent-free” environment, I’d be asked to leave because it is that potent. Wheeewie!

❌ A bit of that "sweaty" feeling (not scent though) after a few hours in.

πŸ’

So would I ditch my other deodorants and go by this one? Probably not yet. The scent for me is just too overpowering. However, it is so far fairly effective at keeping sweat at bay, so maybe another scent has potential.

A Whole Lotta Love For Our Little Planet: Love Beauty & Planet Haircare Review

Love Beauty and Planet is certainly taking the natural beauty care industry by storm!

As a ChickAdvisor, I received this amazing complimentary package of body wash, shampoo and conditioner that I wanted to share my honest thoughts on.

Body Wash (473 ml)
  • Heavenly scent with the combination of shea butter and sandalwood.
  • Love the pump format.
  • silky texture when applying
  • no residue left on the skin after rinsing off
  • clean and nourishing
  • no irritation (so far!)

Shampoo/Conditioner (400 ml)
  • Again, the scent is wonderful. I never really used anything with sandalwood but you literally feel like you have stepped into a spa when you open up the bottle from this particular line.
  • Wish it came in a pump format
  • Both products have a nice light texture
  • Easy to rinse off
  • See ya dry hair - this conditioner leaves your hair touchably soft
For the packaging overall, I like that the bottle is 100% recycled plastic, even though the cap nor the pump are. With the on-going environmental issues with plastic, it would have been better to have it in a glass bottle that could be reusable. Maybe something to think about in the near future.

The sizes of the bottles are great! A lot of other brands have dinky sizes that may be awesome and effective, but only last a very short period of time. They stand by their cruelty-free and plant-based mantra, yet charge way more! Sorry, i'm still a bit of a budget shopper, so if I am going to pay more than usual for a product, I want it to last! These will be used quite a while in my home and so although it runs a bit higher in price, you do get a lot of product and value!

Other great things about the brand that you may resonate with:

Vegan, cruelty-free, ethically-sourced and plant-based ingredients.

East Gate Estates Walk: Awakening the Beauties

A few photos that I took while having a leisurely walk around East Gate Estates.
Is Spring finally here?

Enjoy!

Beautiful Autumn Day

These colours are so gorgeous.
I had to snap a photo of this tree that I walk by all the time.

Cosmetics Review Wet N Wild: Wear It Out!

I remember back when I was a teenager always seeing the displays of Wet N Wild and buying the electric blues and fuchsia pinks for nail polish. They'd stain my nails horribly, and I would have to scrub it off with nail polisher remover that smelled so bad, the windows always had to be open. The joys of looking pretty. We've certainly come a long way in the beauty industry, haven't we?

Honestly, I never really got into the lip products from Wet N Wild because although they had some beautiful colours, they never seemed hydrating enough and I didn't care for the textures. I recall they were always considered really low-end quality, as opposed to brands like CoverGirl, Maybelline, etc.. Fast forward to today and they are one of my favourite brands to wear!

I've been getting a lot of compliments lately on my lips, so I guess I made the right purchase going with  Wet N Wild's - Mega Last Matt Lip Cover in the shade Spiked With Rum.  This colour is really flattering, long-lasting (around 4 hours of wear before reapplying) and it leaves your lips feel really creamy.
"Hyaluronic Microspheres provide extraordinary adhesion to lips, an exclusive polymer complex offers cushion-like feel and texture, and natural marine plant extracts coenzyme Q10 and vitamins A & E help smooth lips." -  Wet N Wild
Here I am, wearing Wet N Wild's Spiked With Rum

So now the downside. The cap is horrible. I came home to find my purse smeared with colour inside as the cap came off without me realizing it. Luckily, I was able to sanitize the lipstick so I didn't need to toss it in the garbage, and I got most of the colour off of my purse, but let me say that the cap is useless. It continues to fall off, even though it looks like it has a good seal and the colour smears on the cap. I don't know if  this is an issue buying online from Amazon, but how disappointing! I cannot take this in my purse, so it just sits on my table and I use it as needed because I don't want another problem.

Ugh, see what I mean. More lipstick on the cap too!

Overall, I really love the lip colour and all its benefits. Wet N Wild also claims to be cruelty-free, if that is important to you.  I just wish the packaging was better so I could take this along with me when I go out, instead of leaving it lonely in the house.  There are plenty of other products I would love to try from this line, but I do have a bit of hesitancy and I am sure you can understand why.

Hair Care - L'Oreal Paris Root Cover Up Review: No Commitment Required

Hi everyone!

I've been having some fun lately experimenting with some new beauty-related products. This one is from L'Oreal Paris and it's their new Root Cover Up that people have been really buzzing about!

So here's my thoughts on the product:

-After one wash, it's all gone, so it's a temporary fix. It's good for a special occasion when you want to look extra glam and/or you're going to be photographed.

-For me, it wasn't a dramatic change and my boyfriend sprayed several times to get everything even. I don't have a lot of grey roots, just some grey strains that pop up annoyingly throughout my head.

-Ample amount of product, so this would last you at least a month or more, if you are not using it every day.

-Easy application, but shake well and spritz into the air first. No mess, although I was a bit hesitant so I covered my whole face in case any product colour got on me. We were outside when applying just to make sure nothing sprayed all over the place since it's an aerosol can.

-Makes your hair a little stiff after too, which is a downside. Maybe they can add some kind of moisturizer to combat that issue.

-Ammonia/peroxide free, so no irritation!  I am one of those super sensitive individuals, so I was happy that I didn't get any kind of negative reaction.

-Several different shades to choose from. I got the dark brown.

Have you used this product yet? If so, leave me a comment or e-mail, telling me how you liked it and what shade you chose!

*Disclaimer: I got this product for free to test out, in return for an honest review.

Glorious November Weather At East Gate Estates

It is a beautiful day in East Gate for walking the pathway, not just for people, but for our furry friends too!

I know that this weather won't last, but while it does, I'm surely taking advantage of it.

Danielle Creations Beauty Review: All Rolled Up and Ready To Go!

A lot of times, we think that having the right makeup is the most important part of our daily beauty routine. News flash, it's not. It is essential that even before a decision is made about what to put on our faces (foundation, eyeliner, mascara, etc...) we need a set of good quality makeup brushes. This will help us satisfy whatever look we're trying to achieve.

Searching for some new makeup brushes, I came across Danielle Creations, a vibrant company with an eye for innovation and and over 46 years of success in the beauty industry. Keeping personal care products locally developed and manufactured here in Canada is one aspect that they really pride themselves on and creating formulas that leave out potentially harsh chemicals and preservatives. (Remember we all react differently!)

Also, if it is important to you, they have made great strides in providing consumers with a commitment to never test any of their ingredients or products on animals.

I immediately fell in love with their purple collection (if you haven't guessed by now, my favourite colour is purple!) of brushes.

Here is a photo of the gorgeous purple houndstooth patterned roll-up case, which includes 7 high-quality synthetic brushes.

Angled Powder/Blush Brush
Foundation Brush
All Over Eye Shadow Brush
Liner Brush
Angled Liner/Definer Brush
Sponge Eye Shadow Applicator
Brow Comb/Brush
Brush Roll

Instead of carrying a huge make up case and rummaging through all the different brushes that I may or may not need, I really like that this rolls up so easily, especially without damaging any of the brushes. It takes up very little room in a suitcase, so it's great for taking on trips.

A couple photos here of the brushes that I use most often when i'm applying my pressed mineral foundation  (I have extremely sensitive/reactive skin) so for coverage, this type seems to work well.

Honestly, I don't think these brushes are designed very different from many other makeup brushes that I have used. Aside from the bold colour combo and nice soft bristles, i'm not feeling like they are setting a trend in any way. It's just a good quality set that you can use, plain and simple.

My only complaint is that I wish both of these brushes were a little bit thicker.

I'll have to report back on how this set will hold up with regular use, especially when cleaning them!

I'm still interested in finding something that really distinguishes itself from the rest of the makeup brush pack though. I guess you could say that when it comes to products, I am always excited when companies break the mold out of current marketing trends and really present me with that "wow" factor.  This is a difficult task to always achieve, but that aspect can really secure customer loyalty, which in this day and age is pretty important.

If you'd like to purchase these lovely brushes, you can go here.  Keep in mind, if you haven't fallen in love with the purple, you can choose from cream, silver or even black.

Remember, when thinking of beauty, it can often be expressed through functionality and art, all rolled up into one.

Broadway imPress Nails: Mother's Day weekend surprise!

I decided that I would offer anyone on my Facebook list to have the opportunity to get their nails done by me for Mother's Day weekend, with the free imPress nail kits that I received from Influenster.

My first "guinea pig" was really excited to have her nails done this way, as health-issues have been a hindrance to continue to get professional manicures, especially with the harsh smells of nail polish.

After reading the instructions and also watching a couple of the Youtube video reviews, my friend arrived at my house. I heard the 'oooh's and ahhhh's' since the first box that I got contained pink/black zebra print, and this is her favourite colour combination.

I did the following steps: Washed and dried her nails, cleansed her nails with the complimentary alcohol towelette, filing wasn't necessary, organized the press-on nails to fit each fingernail, peeled the tab back, stuck on each finger, and she pressed firmly for about 30 seconds to make sure all the nails were sturdy.

Before I knew it, the whole process was done!  Hoping her nails will last at least up to a week, as stated on the package.

PROS: no nail polish smell, no basecoat/top coat needed, good length, pretty designs, holds its place on fingernail, tab is sticky

CONS: had some difficulty opening the bottle top, difficult to find the right size for each nail on the first attempt,

TIPS:  lay out the nails in the order that you are applying them, so it's easier to do all of them in the right sequence.

Gail's pretty new nails.

SPAtacular at Coral Medical Health Spa

There’s nothing quite like being pampered. Some may feel it is overrated, but that’s probably because they haven’t engaged in a true “spa” experience. Well, I think I could probably change the minds of many, after spending time at Coral Medical Health Spa here in Windsor, Ontario. I must say that I was a little nervous going there because you just never know what to expect, but upon opening up the door, I was greeted with a smile and a hello by the receptionist. She guided me to the massage chairs (what a way to wait; doctors, take note!) where I could relax and offered me a beverage until the aesthetician came out to get me. They also have a lovely waterfall right in front, which really created an atmosphere of total bliss.

After filling out some routine paperwork (known allergies, medical history, purpose of my visit, what to expect before/after services, etc) before I knew it, Jena (the aesthetician) came out and introduced herself. She led me down a long hallway into a very quaint room, while dimming the lights and turning on some meditative music. I was very pleased to see how impeccably clean everything was. After a short discussion on what she would be doing and if I had any questions, I proceeded to the comfy bed, in which I would spend the next 2 hours inside.

I was given Coral’s “therapeutic facial” treatment, along with a neck, hand and arm massage. Since I have sensitive skin, Jena designed a customized facial that would not only hydrate my skin, but also help heal and repair it too. The products she used were from a high-quality skincare line called Dermalogica and were the perfect choice. Every step of a skin care analysis, called face-mapping to exfoliation, was done with absolute care and precision. The hot towels that she applied to my face were soothing and I must say, her massage technique was like the touch of an angel. During the treatment, Jena was more than happy to answer any questions I had about my skin or even just about skincare in general.

At the end, Jena gently awoke me (I dozed off a few times because of being utterly relaxed) to let me know that I could take my time getting up and she would meet me in the hallway. Coming out, my skin felt rejuvenated and smooth as silk. We talked about her recommendations to keep my skin in good shape now and throughout the rest of my life. She was extremely knowledgeable and I was surprised at how few products I really needed, compared to what I had experienced with other spa places.

I was also given a goody bag that was filled with all of their other services and coupons for future visits and a great incentive for 25% off for any referrals.

For some people, spa treatments often feel like luxury items that are only affordable on special occasions or for the affluent clientele. All of Coral Spa services are very reasonably priced for the quality and professionalism that you will receive. Don’t spend money on your beloved Tim Horton’s coffees and late-night fast food jaunts that only give you a temporary fix. Save up those coins and bills and invest in yourself and give your loved ones a day at the spa, Coral Medical Health Spa!

Below you can read my Q&A with Ken Sherman, who is the General Manager at Coral

With all the beauty trends that continually come out in popular media publications, do you follow a certain protocol when deciding which products/treatments will be offered?

(Ken Sherman, General Manager at Coral) – Absolutely! Before we consider whether to bring on new technology, treatments and/or products to our menu, we make sure to research the treatment/product in detail. We first determine where it’s made, origin of ingredients and technology, how long the company has been in business, third party certification and reviews, and first-hand accounts from other clinics that use the products/technology. We gather this information to determine if the products/technology is really effective, safe and uncomplicated. The next step is to invite a representative from the company to come in and give us a formal presentation on the products/technology and answer any questions we may have. During the presentation members of our team will sample a treatment if it’s new technology we’re looking at, and/or take samples of the products home to use for the duration of a skin cycle. If all goes well, we proceed to offer complimentary treatments to our clients that we feel to be most suitable for the treatment, and get their feedback. Lastly, once we decide that this treatment is safe, effective, with great outcomes, we will train and certify our professional team on how to use and recommend the products/technology and encourage everyone on the team to use it.

“Upselling” is a common sales tactic that is well-known in any establishment, especially when it comes to aesthetics, health and wellness. I will admit that I’ve been duped into spending money on products that I didn’t really need nor would add any benefit to my life because of fear-mongering and clever persuasion. How is your staff trained to assure a client is being offered an honest experience?

(KS) – Our team is trained from day one to offer only those treatments and products that would benefit their clients. If we feel that someone is making recommendations just for the sake of a sale, they will quickly realize that Coral Medical Health Spa is not the right place for them. It’s something we take very seriously! In business (regardless of the industry), when you make empty promises and recommend things just for the sake of profit, you may do well initially, but quickly people catch on and the reputation of the business is tarnished. In fact our mission statement reads as follows: “Our mission is to provide the residents of Windsor and Essex County the absolute best in age prevention services, day spa services and medical cosmetic treatments available, by focusing on restoring youth, enhancing beauty and improving health outcomes through disease prevention and health promotion, under the guidance of specialized health care professionals, working in close partnership with their clients, in a way that exemplifies value, honesty, integrity, and above all, care and commitment to everyone involved.

While looking through your website and seeing a variety of services, I am very impressed with the fact that Coral offers a Women’s Center that focuses on prevention, treatment in many area’s of a woman’s life, especially chronic pain. Can you explain more about what someone can expect when walking-in the first time? Why does addressing the holistic aspect play such a vital role in women’s overall health?

(KS) – This is a great question! Dr. Sherman our founder and Medical Director, began her professional career as a family physician (she continues to do this today). Dr. Sherman’s focus has always been disease prevention and her passion was working with Women. Prevention is so important, combining a medical approach with nutrition, exercise and stress reduction to improve health outcomes rather than just masking the symptoms. Dr. Sherman’s focus and passion was combined to create the Women’s Health Centre. When clients join the centre, Dr. Sherman and the nurse practitioner perform a detailed health assessment including a full physical, blood work (in our lab on-site) and lifestyle analysis. After the assessment is complete, Dr. Sherman together with the client devise a lifestyle plan which may include medical treatment, nutrition programming with nutritional supplements, and stress reduction techniques. With the medical spa we can actually offer all of these treatments under one roof… by utilizing our nutrition and lifestyle programs, personal training studio (on-site) and day spa for pampering and relaxation. Once the program begins, the client will come for regular follow-up visits with Dr. Sherman, the Nurse Practitioner and Lifestyle Educator to monitor their progress and make adjustments as needed.

Are there any plans to have a Men’s Center to address the growing concerns for the male population?

(KS) – The same concerns that exist for women also do for men. And, to that effect all of the same programs we offer in the Women’s Health Centre, we offer for men as well. In fact, many of our clients in the centre have brought in their spouses and significant others for treatment! This is very exciting for us, as we continue to grow our male clientele and offer more treatments and products directly to them.

In all your years as a business owner, has there been any inspirational stories from clients that you can share at Coral that really affected you in a positive way?
(KS) – Too many to list. We have had hundreds of clients tell us how much better they look and feel after they come to see us. Specifically, I recall one client that starting coming to the centre as a patient and slowly began utilizing the other services we offer. She was in a very unhealthy state when she started. On various medications, over weight and overly stressed. We worked closely with her and with the lifestyle and nutrition programs, the personal training and medical aesthetic treatments we offer, she lost over 50 pounds, stopped taking the cholesterol and blood pressure medication and freshened up her look. She told us that she hasn’t felt this way since she was in her twenties!

Being in business since 2005, and building a solid reputation within the community, do you feel there are any aspects that can be improved upon, as the needs of individuals change?
(KS) – Absolutely, there are always ways to improve… we constantly survey our clients and our team to get their feedback on their experience with our company, and what we can add or do better. Furthermore we want to know that we’re delivering the absolute best client experience we can! That means maintaining a clean and sterile environment, friendly and courteous team, safe and effective treatment outcomes and a pricing strategy to allow nearly every individual to take part in what we do. In addition it’s always important to be aware of what’s happening in the industry and be aware of trends. By researching carefully we know what we can add and do to improve.

a nice area to relax

*Update: Buyer beware!  I had some reactions with the skincare products that were recommended to me and I must say that I was not pleased with the customer service at Coral when their tone was completely different and only pushed to buy MORE products. I went ahead and contacted the actual company to figure out a amicable solution, as the products were incredibly expensive! They were very quick to handle the situation professionally and contacted Coral, who I will say was very displeased that I went directly to their supplier. Needless to say, I will not return to Coral for any treatments, nor can I truthfully recommend them due to this unfortunate incident. Also, I find that some of their treatments and products that they carry are very questionable and not a business I can support. Customer service is key to any establishment, and they surely blew this one.

Mannequin Love

Sometimes there are moments in life that you want to capture, put in a tightly-sealed bottle and store away for those times when you want to relive them. This week, I had one of those moments.

On one of our usual strolls, Bill and I stopped in a thrift shop to look around because you just never know what treasures you may find!  Heading to the back of the store, there were all kinds of  furniture and electronics... this is where the magic happened. Bill found a mannequin bodice! She was perfect...and oddly enough had a very similar body shape to mine.  Bill said that he had to get it for me. We could paint and decorate her anyway I wanted and then it will be displayed in our bedroom. He always finds a way to make me feel beautiful and completely embraces my unusual passions, or some may say fetishes. The cashier rang her through and giddy as a school girl, we left. As the sun began to set, we walked home with my new mannequin.

There is just something about the way mannequins look that almost make you want to breathe life into them or just sit back and admire their stillness in parts or as a whole. They represent a beautiful piece of fragility within us all, so they are silent beauties. They also represent comfort and healing to me. I don't see them as just a piece of plastic mold or whatever texture they happen to come in.

Here she is. Quite stunning, don't you think?  I felt the need to cover her up properly for the photo and just add in one of my favourite movies; Mannequin in the background! :)

VNV Nation: Automatic

I finally bought the one gift that I wanted the most this year ---VNV Nation's "Automatic" cd. ♥

Thank you for creating a piece of work that continues to help me see the beauty and strength in victory not vengeance!
