Last night we watched The Trial of the Chicago 7. It is such an impactful film that I wanted share a bit of musings, as it shines a bright light on the injustices happening in the court/legal system and the complexities of radical activism.
In the film, it starts out like a circus, like an absolute joke! It is astounding that someone who we are supposed to call "Your Honour" is anything but an honourable person. Let's not forget stripping people of their dignity like this judge did time and time again throughout the trial. His willful ignorance was an embarrassment. We were actually yelling at the tv screen - and you know a movie is emotionally-gripping when that happens.
The performances of the entire cast were incredible to watch. One who stood out for me the most though was Sasha Baren Cohen (known as the wacky Borat, as well as my favourite role of him in the children's fantasy; Hugo) playing Abbie Hoffman.
Watching this movie, we can all see that history sadly repeats itself. Were the 7 totally innocent? No, they were not. However, they deserved a fair trial. The brutality shown by certain police officers once again is another reminder of how the abuse of power is alive and well to this day.
We need to train those who take on the oath to serve and protect much better and remind them of human decency in every skin colour they come across, as well as strip them of their badges when they do not comply. We also need to disbar judges sooner who are beyond incompetent and direct actions that are inhumane.
Whether we like it or not, our actions will continue to impact generations to come. We are living proof of that in 2021. I'd like to leave them with more peace and love over violence and hatred because the whole world IS watching.
